I bet he is whishing he had spent a little time in your shop now! My son he does not enjoy working on cars either, I think their brains are wrapped around those little electronic gadgets that run the world today.
Someone told me to start selling vacations to Europeans who want to see the "Old West", but I have just not had the energy to set up such an enterprise. Maybe I should start selling week long horseback rides in the desert to pay for the cars!

I bet this could turn into a profitable business. Look at the success of all these "back to nature / survive in the wilderness...." TV shows.
I just looked up where you're located. Lake Berryessa and Napa Valley have been my favorite areas for motorcycle riding when I lived in Berkeley back in 1980.
    Great memories are coming up.

    Very nice work Wokke.

When doing this mod are the front timing covers all M70? I guess other than the short block itself is everything else M70 and direct bolt on with no machining?

If you remember - this is the perfect time to visit Northern CA. The grapes are ripe in Napa and the wine is flowing! --- Did your workload slow down enough that you can come visit? I have an 850 you can drive while you are here - just sitting here waiting for you !!

You've got it Wolf - I'll put you up here at the ranch, you can fill you up on old Burbon, shoot guns and ride horses, live like it is still 1870 in Old California!
I have lots of E38 750IL and E31 850i cars and that we can play with. One of them has your chips already, but this looks much more fun.
We have a lift, parts washer, big compressor, blasting cabinet, tools and lots of beer and Whiskey.
    When are you arriving?

    All the best

    Jon

    Would you please adopt me?

I'm not sure if my customers would like to see published what they have spent on their cars. I don't want to be held responsible for any future divorces.
But I happily reply to PMs.

SoCial 8s, how about a project? I'm sure we have enough talent and connections to get something like this done. Wokke could be our coach. We would just need a couple of donor motors to start.

Is there anyway of testing the integrity of the bottom end ones M73 donor motor before installing it?

I guess you could do a cold compression test before ripping it apart but that only tells you so much. My biggest concern is buying an M73 donor motor, then going through the time and expense installing it only to find that it burns oil, knocking, etc.... for example.
In my case the chance of finding one locally to me is slim to none, so I'd most likely be buying one from abroad putting my faith to an unknown seller - any thoughts on this?

If you REALLY start such a project you won't just dump some unknown engine into your E31.
There is always a risk though, no doubt. Compression test is kind of tricky if the engine isn't installed. I always do a leak down test. Cylinder wall inspection via an endoscope camera. I use one with built in WiFi so i can see the picture on my tablet or PC screen. Much better than those tiny screens on the devices themselves.
And bottom end simply by removing the oil pans and checking the bearings. BTW, I never had a BMW V12 with bad rod or main bearings.

With the use of performance cams and increased displacement you will need custom motronic chips. Wolf mentioned using custom chips in his hybrids, I am sure he will be willing to sell some copies...

About to start building a hybrid myself and would be VERY interested in getting a set of Wokke chips for it. I have the Wokke chips (3) in my current M70 powered 850 and they make a huge difference.

I do have customized chips for the M70B54S. You can also use 850CSi chips but power is "only" 350HP with those.

A special set for the M70B54 is still pending. All cars which got this engine from me weren't around for long enough for custom programming. And currently everyone goes for the S version which i have a chip set for.
