    Too many.

    E36 lock actuator replacement procedure:

I got a few requests for the writeup, so I just figured I'd post it here to get it into the archive. The steps are as follows:

    1. Remove door panel.
    2. Peel back vapor barrier.
    3. Remove inside door handle (1 phillips screw).
    4. Disconnect wiring harness from actuator. The connector has a lock that slides downward and you pull outward at the same time. You'll also have to cut the zip tie holding the harness to the door.
    5. Unsnap lock rod from outside handle from latch assembly. I use a screwdriver with a 90 degree bend in the tip for this.
    6. Remove torx screws holding latch assembly to door.
    7. Remove allen screws holding window track to bottom of door (This is not in the manual, but helps give you room to wiggle the latch around inside the door.)
    8. Using great acrobatics, move the latch to the open area of the door. YOU DON'T have to remove the latch from the door. The actuator can be replaced with the latch loose inside the door. You'll have to lift the latch up and off of the outer door handle (kind of an up-back-down motion) and work with the inner door handle rod and inner lock rod attached. It's very tight in there.
    9. Once it's loose, just snap the actuator off and install the new one, noting the position of the actutor. It's also a good idea to thoroughly lubricate the latch assembly.
    10. Installation is the reverse. Don't forget the allen screws for the window track and the new zip tie for the wiring.

The passenger side part number is: 67-11-1-387-726 and costs about $55. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks Tom!! My driver door just died on me and instead of having the stealer do it, I can now do it myself. Both my rear doors went at the same time and the labor was expensive.

Thanks again for saving me around 80 bucks!

I'm having a problem getting this thing back in after I popped it out. Any help is appreciated!
