I can get access to DME, KOMBI, ASC, AB, EWS, but not to the general module (GM). Previous owner installed or had someone install an aftermarket alarm system, and they cut two wires at the GM plug instead of the alarm plug and put them back together. The GM still works, but there is no way to talk to it with INPA or other programs. Anyone have an idea?

EDIT: The wires that were erroneously cut and put back together are green with white stripe and white with small yellow stripes.

No, single vanos M52-nonTU...but I have to add that only since I have the tiny-ADS cable, I am able to read the ABS and BC. When I was using one of those USB type cables, these units could not be reached. It seems to me that only the ADS cable is capable to connect to Pin15 (RxD, L-Line) which is indeed present in my OBD1 connector.

my guess is that the cluster in my car is just not hooked up to RXD... One of the electrical trouble shooting guides that seems best to resemble my car in other ways, shows no connection to the OBD from the cluster other than the SI reset to pin 15 of the cluster to pin 7 of the OBD.

Does it still mention it's a driver issue?

You may need to manually install the driver to the cable.

This involves setting it up as a "USB Serial Port" using the 2.12.00 FTDI drivers. You must do that within the Device Manager, properties window for the cable.

If it's a driver issue, then it's very likely it's something within your Windows that is impeding it. As a quick test, I would try plugging in the USB to another windows PC and installing drivers (BMW software doesn't have to be installed to verify driver issues).

Probably much too soon for an answer, but has anyone, or does anyone plan to set this up on a new Microsoft surface Go for $399? Seems like an ideal machine from a size/weight/battery standpoint. Then again, the cheapest model may not have enough ram or storage.

It should all run just fine.
Thanks for the tip, I didn't even know about the Surface Go.

I am using an older Surface Pro (~10" size) and it's perfect for me.
I will look into the Surface Go as a future replacement.

Hmm, but the processor may be a downside.

Nice, seriously thinking about picking one up. I guess I also need to see what the ISTA requirements are...i think that was a little more intense.

I practically forget how i did it, but i uninstalled the device through device manager again, reinstalled the drivers that automatically downloaded upon re-plugging it in, and the device description was both a USB serial converter, and a USB serial port (com5). i set the latency to 1, com port back to 1, and when i go into INPA, i have a black circle where it says battery on (regardless if the cable is even plugged into the car), however now the ignition light seems to do its job perfectly.

All of the buttons on the bottom of the screen are blank; there is no e90 button to select my car. what does that have to do with?

Edit; noticed a lot of files were missing, going to fresh install again to see what happened.

I was getting a bunch of errors and the Ediabas server crashing. I fixed this by setting transmit and receive buffers to 2048. I tried this because the old instructions I had for version 5.02 had that entry.

    Thanks for putting this together!

    Hello All,

First I wanted to thank 328 Power 04 for his amazing contribution to this forum.

I have been studying this INPA thread for some time now and finally decided to try it. I successfully downloaded and installed the package on my old Windows Vista laptop but have been unable to communicate with the car. Following advice in this thread (probably from 328 Power 04) I tried installing the USB cable on my newer Windows 8 laptop and I am unable to get the recommended driver installed. After some further research I believe I have purchased the incorrect cable, one with the CH340T chip in it, and after re-reading some of the instructions here I see 328 Power 04 tells us specifically to NOT purchase that cable!

So, my question is, how can I tell from the advertising if the cable has that chip or not? There are so many cables to choose from and the recommendations from 328 Power 04 are no longer available so E-Bay and Amazon always find something similar. Some of the listings have CH340T in the title, some do not. Is it safe to assume if CH340T is not in the title then the chip is not in the cable?

    Thanks for your help,

    Andy

Unfortunately that's the nature of ebay. Links don't tend to last.

I usually search for ft232rl in title, or you can get an "INPA K+DCAN" (but avoid the white mainboard k+dcan).

Both of thise will work the same with the 20-pin adapter.

Thanks for that info. Searching for "INPA K+DCAN" turned up different cables from what I had seen before so a new cable is ordered. I already have the 20-pin adapter.

OK! I received my new cable yesterday and today I worked on getting it installed on the computer. Using an older Windows Vista laptop I was able to connect the cable and install the driver. The computer identified the port as COM15 so I changed EDIABAS to COM15, but I was still not getting any communication with the car. It wasn't until I changed the port number to COM1 (didn't move the cable to another port, just changed the name) and EDIABAS to COM1 that I established communication with the car.

So, it looks like I have INPA up and running! Thanks to 328 Power 04 for putting this all together. I'm sure I will have more questions after I poke around in the program further. The first warning I got was a pop up warning that said "Versions do not match. Malfunction possible!" I continued on anyway and the data I received seemed to be correct, like it read the correct VIN number and I'm pretty sure the build data was correct, and I do have one error code that has to do with the EVAP system that I will bring that up in a separate thread (I knew it was there from my scan tool), but I was wondering if I have the wrong version of INPA and where to get the correct version? My car is a 2001 2.5i roadster.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Those "errors" are normal and unavoidable. They cause no problems at all.

I had to use slightly older database files for E36 (and others), simply because they were in English. If I were to put ones that would not throw those errors, then it would have been in German.

You don't need to look for other versions, unless you want to have them in German.

    Hi Andy!
Could you give me the link or idea of which cable you ended up getting that worked for you? I am getting ready to try and set up this software as well. I have a older laptop running XP that I plan on using. I am running down airbag codes that I currently have via the B800 tool that I got, but want to dig deeper before I decide that the module may need to be replaced or sent off for reprogramming. The B800 gave me the dreaded “Internal ECU Error” along with some others and of course they won’t clear. Want to dig deeper before I ask 328 Power 04 what he would recommend I do. Thank you both in advance!!

Sorry for the long delay in the reply, I have been travelling for a couple of weeks and somehow missed your request. I found many cables on Amazon by using the search as 328 Power 04 suggested: "INPA K+DCAN" (but avoid the white mainboard k+dcan) and purchased this cable:

LZLRUN INPA K+CAN K+DCAN Car Diagnostic Tool Cable OBD USB Interface for BMW with FT232RL NCS Coding

I did not use the disc that came with the cable, but used the driver included in the INPA package.

Thanks to the guy that put this together.

I have an older HP Compac TC1100 tablet that I thought I might use as a diagnostic tool.

It has 2GB ram running windows XP tablet edition.

I went through the set up process.
Though I had it all together but when connecting to my 98 M Roadster
    I see no menu.
    Except F1, F2 and F10.

Attached is a few screen shots.

Pressing F2 brings up an error message.

    Any ideas guys?

    Many thanks

    Thanks for the help.
    I really appreciate it

There was one issue I recall

I could not get Patheditor to work.
    I downloaded a different version

    I think it worked.

But not really IT Savy I’m afraid.

You may not even have to change environment variables (path editor stuff) anymore. Program does it automatically when running as administrator.

To fix your issue, just run the Step3 Load data part again. It doesn't seem like it was ran at all.

And then you must make sure the com port numbers match like my instructions in connection troubleshoot document.
