I am not sure at all why that would come up.
I would make sure you're running the program as XP service pack 3 compatibility, and As Administrator.

The BMW Standard Tools program has been installed thousands of times by many people, and I haven't seen this yet.
Can you try on a different computer?

    1998 BMW Z3
I have a 1998 Z3 2.8l automatic. wife burned up the transmission and I replaced it with a used one out of another 1998 Z3. I havn't been able to get it to shift out of first gear. I'm hoping flashing the TCM or the ECU will help. I have installed BMW standard tools and INPA works but when I attempt to flash TCM I get error messages. When Ive looked at updating the ECU it looks like it has the up to date files already flashed. I used the daten files from this thread and got the error message for the TCU and then i tried the datens from Bimmer geeks and got the same message. Im new to flashing and coding so I'm stuck at this point. Is there something else that i need to do. Do i need to use NCS expert to code the new transmission to the TCM. Willa flash update work. Just need some advice. one thing I did notice is that when i have INPA running and I look up the coidng info for the tcm that the manufacture date isnt there. Don't know if thats related. Again any help is appreciated. Here are pictures of the error codes that come up. IMG_0381.jpg IMG_0379.jpg

That transmission module is not flashable. And that's a desperate attempt, as it wouldn't solve anything.

Can you simply post the current errors in transmission and dme?

And as I understand, you replaced the transmission itself, not the module?

Hello I am having trouble connecting my Blue vag-com from ecstuning to use INPA...my heater and ac are in transport or energy save mode.
-the INPA says no battery and no ign
-it will read but not clear the codes
    please help it’s cold lol

    - I downloaded ftdi and did the pid_6001 modified to pid_7523 in fitbus and fitinf to connect the usb serial port

If you have a connection to read codes, then you need to delete transport mode out of all the modules.
Attempting to clear error codes is not enough.

So do you have a connection or not?

No I don’t have complete connection with the cable...I’ve tried several times. Is it possible the cable is bad?

    What month/year production Z4?
The blue vagcom cables don't ever report ignition and voltage anyways.

If pre 02/2007, then you need to bridge pins 7&8 of the OBD cable.
If post 02/2007, then you need to be using a Canbus capable cable, such as K+DCAN.

Make sure your cable latency is set at 1ms.
I may need to help you get a Z4 menu in your INPA, if you don't already have one.

    Available cables?

Great information here and can't wait to start learning to use software for my 2001 z3 3.0i and my son's 2005 mini cooper s. However to get started we need the right cables. The cables in the OP are no longer available (not surprising since this awesome thread has been going for 4yrs!) and there are TONS of cables out there, so I don't want to get frustrated by trial and error on just cables. Anyone have current links to tried and true cables so we can start our journey to keep these cars on the road?

    Cheers,

    Truck

I gave up updating the links because they always change.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/163499913276 this works well (green main board K+dcan with a switch)

And set the switch all the way to the right. It will bridge pins 7&8.

Any of the "bmw 20-pin adapter" cables should be fine for Z3.

Completely understand on keeping up with links, they change so fast. I appreciate the lead. I ordered both usb and 20 pin cables. I'm sure my son and i will have plenty of questions once they get here. Excited to get started. Thank you.

Has anybody downloaded this pack recently and gotten a trojan keylogger warning?

I unzipped it and my Windows Defender picked up the trojan in the Setup .exe program. I scanned the zip on virustotal and it's telling me that there's also a trojan.

Edit: No issue on the older ADS files. I'm going to install those first, as I have an ADS serial cable that I want to get working again. However, I have an USB cable that I'd also like to get running.

Hmm, that's new, with 3+ years going.
Do you know which file inside specifically it's complaining about? I will need to check myself.

2 out of 59 isn't very many, and if any amount of code matches some code from an actual virus, you will get warnings.

From what I remember, it was the Standard_Tools_Setup .exe file, the main one lol. Keep in mind Windows Defender also found it and quarantined it, so I couldn't even run the program unless I took it off that list.

I was able to extract the prereq patheditor.exe from the pack last night. Going to get that installed and make sure I can get the ADS stuff working tonight.

Lol. The Standard Tools 2.12 installer is straight from BMW untouched. It's very safe to assume that there is a false positive going on here.

Awesome. I'll go ahead and install, hopefully no issues with both installations and can get the two path folders working when I rename them!

First of all, I love this thread. Abel, fantastic job with the instructions.

I have a '99 Z3 2.3 that I bought a couple weeks back. No CEL on during my inspection but of course it came on when I got home. Got my laptop and cables setup, read today for the first time. I have a bunch of misfire codes (valve cover is leaking) and I'm leaving those out below to keep the post short and I've ordered parts for that. Searching isn't yielding much in the way of help with these two errors for my particular vehicle.

Any thoughts? I'm guessing the first one might be O2 sensor related because I also have two "lambda control" errors, but I'm not sure. I can't find anything regarding the second one since I don't have any steering wheel buttons.

So the first error is from the DME (engine control), and it's just that: a small leak in the fuel tank pressurization system as a whole. This can mean a leaky gas cap, but it is often leaks under the hood.
Nothing to do with oxygen sensor.

What module did the second error come from?
That is unusual, and I would suspect wrong vehicle coding or maybe a module has been changed from another car?

Clear it, and then see what comes back. Definitely find all vacuum leaks and seal them up. A smoke machine will help a lot.

Thanks for the analysis & help!

I'm plugging into the 20 pin adapter under the hood then in INPA I'm pressing F2 for E36, then Error, then Engine, then running the MS 42 script.

I just got a smoke machine, haven't had time to try that yet but it sounds like that's next up. I'll work on that, clear errors, and come back. Thanks again.
