I'm trying to read GM4 (ZKE4) module on 2000 Z3 but it's not working with INPA or ISTA. The module is working and I can read it with CarSoft and the corresponding serial cable.
Does this module require an ADS interface?
Why did you find it hard to believe that the ZKE needs L-line?
I have pin 15 populated in my 20-pin socket, which corresponds with the wiring diagram. ZKE isn't replying solely on the K-line so I can assume I need a RS232 port to communicate to the ZKE?
Also, would a setup like this work: 20-pin to 16-pin connector from the car, 16-pin to DB9 RS232 to a native RS232 port on a laptop with INPA?
No! You would need an ADS adapter. RS232 is 5v and applying 12v to your PC will not end well.
Lookup Free ADS or they sell a more traditional one on Amazon or Aliexpress for $75. There's also the TinyADS and the classic Fister ADS if you want to explore other designs.
Ah that makes sense haha. Thanks for the info. I’ll go search for a laptop with RS-232.
From my 16553 hacking days, the RS232 standard specifies negative 3-15 and positive 3-15 volt as valid signals, with anything outside of those ranges being invalid noise. Further it is specified that the equipment must be tolerant of 25V spikes in either direction. The problem isn't the computer. the DME can't make a valid RS232 signal. Thus the ADS interface between TTL and rs232 is required.

Learned lots so far diving into this topic.
I recall seeing this vendor mentioned on this forum. I've read TinyADS is out of business so I take it that this is the best option nowadays.

This thread has really lived for a long time. Thanks to 328Power for putting this all together and for answering so many questions over so many years....Just resurrected an old Windows 10 laptop and installed INPA. I got the same errors as post 795 Page 32). ForceFifoEnable failed and RxFIFO failed etc. during the terminal window right at the end of the install. The answer was to run the Registry file. Im pretty sure i followed the instructions to the T, and i don't see a "registry" file in the bundle i unzipped. Can someone please point me in the right direction as to the name of this registry file. Thanks...

OK i figured this out - the file is called serial port.reg and is the very last instruction in the pdf file, AFTER you run the LoadData.exe file - where i saw the errors. Once i ran the "serial Port" file and then ran the LoadData file again all the errors disappeared. So my only suggestion is to have the running of the serial file come BEFORE the running of the LoadData file so that there are no errors.
I would like to be able to run diagnostics on my 2000 Z3,2020 X3, and 2017 X1. I prefer using a standalone unit rather than INPA running in an old laptop. Seems like the Foxwell NT530 would cover everything but there are a lot of problems reported. I also see Launch Creader Elite and Bimmerlink which is a phone app. Can I use these on the Z3? Sounds like I might have to get a 20 pin to OBD adapter or bridge the pins in the 20 pin connector. Anybody have experience with these apps, good or bad? Search doesn't show anything.
One of the best INPA installations I have seen. Good work.
Can we have this thread as a sticky?
Any chance that the upload from post #170 by 328 Power 04 can be re-uploaded? Then link dosnt work no more.
Can this please be re-uploaded somehow? The link is not active any more. :-)
The 6.4.7 version is on there but Google seems to think that some of the installation .bat files involved are suspicious, so they flag it as risky. I'm not sure how to bypass that.

It's a lot more complex than that. Google looks through all the files no matter what they're called and tries to match them against anything they consider malicious code and then make the decision based on percent match.
This is an original file from BMW engineering waaay back in the day, so I'm not touching the contents.

You got a PM! Thanks!
Able - we are installing the INPA 2016, and when we tried to install the Standard_Tools_Setup_2.12.exe, we got an error because my laptop is Windows 10, but it seems that this program is meant for XP. Do you know if there's a version of this file that is compatible with Windows 10, or what would you recommend? We are on Part 2: Main Program Installation of the INPA 2016 installation instructions..
Thanks
