GM power steering pump to BMW steering box High pressure hose

So I have been battling a PS leak for a while now, and losing terribly. For those that have accomplished this without leaks, do you have any advice?

    Thanks,
    Brett

Or maybe I can just convert this thing to a rack. This steering box leak is killing me.

It might help to state what you are working with, your question is very broad. What car and power steering pump will help others give you suggestions. There are too many variables to throw out guesses.

I am connecting a corvette PS pump to the stock e34 six cylinder steering box. My most recent adapter attempt was using this Banjo fitting with the stock 14mm bolt.

I think it would be significantly easier and cheaper to fix the leak than convert to the rack.

I used that same part on my rack and it's completely leak free for 2+ years now.

Is the banjo fitting leaking, the line or the compression fitting on the line?

Don't take this the wrong way, but you are using copper washers on both sides of the fitting aren't you?

I am using the included copper crush washers. I actually can't tell if it is leaking at the banjo or the fitting from the banjo. I know it is not the compression fitting from the line.

My banjo fitting leaked a touch when I first installed it. It was only when I pulled the motor, rebuilt it and put everything back together that it was completely leak free. Maybe try replacing the crush washers and re-tourqe it.

Yeah, this sucker isn't leaking a touch... it is leaking a lot. Maybe a 10" by 10" puddle of PS fluid every time I park the car.

I do not think they have anything for the e34 though

What line are you using? That fitting should be fine. I can't imagine the fitting is leaking unless it's been over torqued to the point the threads are stripped.

My E36 uses a very similar (if not the same) fitting. I used Aeroquip lines and fittings specifically made for p/s application (if I recall it can be used for a/c also). It's a heavy duty steel braided line with the PTFE liner. The line has never leaked. Just about every thing else has at some point...

I like the that AN fitting brazed onto the stock cooler. I can't use their kit because it won't fit with the LS2 power steering pump (plus, I need lines for my hydroboost). But I wonder if I can find someone competent nearby to Tig an AN fitting to my stock cooler?

What size AN is everyone using for power steering?

You can try hydraulic hose repair shops; they can tig or braze it on.

This is another way to accomplish the same thing.

They are available with male or female AN fittings.

    That's a compression fitting?

I'd get it tig'd on. P/S sees PSI as high as 800's right?

PS pressure side get's up in the 1000s PSI. Cooler should be on the low pressure side so it won't see that kind of pressure.

Trying to figure out which is high pressure input vs low pressure output. In this pic is the cooler attached to the low side?

The top is the high pressure line from the pressure side of the pump. Lower hose is the low pressure return line that goes back to the reservoir.

This is how we made our hoses: Cut the high pressure hose from the pump and use a JIC -6 compression fitting on the metal tube end of the GM hose assy. Then SAE hydraulic hose with -6 JIC fittings on each end. We used a banjo fitting with a -6 JIC end on the next component in our PS system, which in our case is the HydroBoost.

Use JIC 37degree fittings, which are the same as AN, but are steel and cost about 1/3 as much. Additionally, there are a great variety of fittings available. Attached is our first hows from the pump. You could do something similar. Not that our sketch the last "-4" on the RH side of the page should be "-3"

    BUMP

The stock high pressure hose has a restrictor. With the fabricated lines we use on these swaps, it's not detrimental to eliminate the restrictor?

In my case, I'll be sending pressure from the GTO pump into the hydroboost unit and out of the hydrobosst to the E36 steering rack.

My original question was specific to a steering box and not a rack. Maybe someone else more familiar with the LS --> BMW Rack interface can answer that.
