I like this word, "Beautymuss." Bruh, dat beautymuss doh!

SO I just mixed my first bit of paint - had no idea how much to mix - and shot it on the lower portion of a door! Worked about 18x better than I expected haha!

My gun has a 1.3 a 1.5 and a 1.7mm tip, so I took the 1.3 out and dropped in the 1.5 (the 1.3 was RRREEAALLY in there, took 10 minutes to get the damn thing off) and went to work. Few test sprays on my plastic blocking the doors and it showed a beautiful football pattern.

The door was sanded down with 40 grit, nasty scratches in the metal all over the place, some badly scratched up poly filler and I just sprayed some glass cleaner on the panel and grabbed a dusty cloth and wiped it off. I wanted to see just HOW BAD things could be. To my surprise, not bad at all.

    Here's the door before:
    687_zpszpzhjfs1.jpg

    After:

    686_zpsul4pok25.jpg

I have a view I'm throwing up showing how it actually looks. Again, lots of dust/particles because I didn't care to make it perfect I wanted to see how a very poorly prepped panel would turn out with this magic epoxy primer. Once the video is saved and uploaded I'll throw it here of course.

My brother has one up at his place in NZ, inside a garage. He just painted his race car. Hey OP what are you doing for dust control, ventilation. That garage has everything else!

Interesting, I would have figured use of guns was more of a scale thing, i.e. Easier/faster for large jobs.

Glad ad to hear there is such a thing as an LVLP gun, as my compressor is small too. Though at this point I only have to redo the failing clear on my PS fender, since it's just one fender I might just try to use a can, heatgun it, then wetsand/buff.

but I am impressed with some of the work shown here from members who have painted in makeshift booths, tempting me to think bigger. Of course I should really complete all my other unfinished projects first...

100% try to complete your other projects, I have found that I'm very good at starting projects, and VERY bad when it comes to completing them.

Me too, much to my wife's chagrin. Short attention span I guess, I'm not yet finished with the trans rebuild and already thinking about that fender, a couple rust spot on the door bottoms, buffing the whole car, fixing the speakers, etc. but then the rebuild has taken me over two months...

How close are you to spraying?

I have one more door to rust treat. Going to hang the doors on the car again tomorrow and get them out of the way and do the rest of the work on them on the car. Then I hope to start in on sanding the hood down.

Then I'll go from there - probably 2K prime the entire car, block it all as best I can, then hit it with base. Time line is anywhere from a few days to ... longer. My father is the heavy lifting helper and he's going in for a major surgery that will put him out of commission for a couple months!! Have to make good friends with the neighbors

    So:

    HAHHAHA, but not really.

I hit the hood today with the epoxy primer, half way through I ran empty in the gun (no biggy) and went to fill it up and when I unhooked the gun the hose popped off knocking the paint everywhere. GREAT. So, I cleaned out the gun, cleaned up the paint, and mixed some more (you are supposed to let it sit for at least 30 minutes before spraying) and when I sprayed next the gun still had a bunch of paint thinner in it, so the paint was all messed up coming out of the gun.

    What, a fool.

So many things went wrong in such a short period of time!! =D

Ah well, will sand it lightly and shoot a second coat some other time. The nice thing about the epoxy is that it dries glossy so you can find all the minor dents and take care of them.

All four doors are sanded down to metal, body work done on them as well. They're waiting for paint, but after todays mess up and the super high humidity and expected storm, I'm calling it quits for the weekend!

Not the update I was hoping to post. Derp.

I don't think it's a commitment issue it seems to be more of a, "this is new and exciting! Gee wiz I sure is learning! . . . k nothing new is happening this is getting stale. Next!"

And that's just my personal relationships!!! Heh

My heavens, you just summed up much of my existence, sorry to admit. That's how I felt in the middle of the last project--the mind works faster than the body.

Didn't you 'might as well' yourself into this full repaint after initially starting some spot repair? I hope I don't slip down that slope as well... My fender reclear may have just become a fender repaint--gentle wet sanding has revealed the top of the fender is laquer checked, and a repaired area must've had exceedingly thin paint as it didn't take much to get to primer, then further sanding takes it back to blue. Too bad, because most of it looked incredible after sanding when wet which is how it would look with clear if I shot it right. Now will have to worry about matching Orient blue, or blending into the door and hood, which along with the bumper could use a respray as well... Might as well get an Alpina lip, and paint all the lowers, ah, escalation of commitment...

actually I might just spray bomb the fender for now, and put off going farther until I get the rest of the car sorted mechanically (getting there, but.must.maintain.focus...)

definitely following your progress, though. And guess what, once you get it sprayed and it cures, you get to learn the art of buffing/jeweling/sealing/maintaining it mar free! Gotta protect your work!

I think what happens to Jamos and maybe you as well...you start off with all the good intentions. Then suddenly your OCD kicks in - at least in my case that is what happens. You discover that this could be better - that needs attention, and suddenly your in over you head with repairs and cost to complete the repairs to your standards.....

My wife figured me out long ago - when she asks for a cost estimate to do a job for her - she now doubles or even triples my estimate so she is prepared for the final outcome. She also has asked many times why each project she asks for always requires some new tool or two that is absolutely required to complete her project, again adding to the cost.

    Haha you got it Darth

I'm in no rush and have tried to stay away from setting any time lines. As a result of that process I've gone from using cheap bondo and spray can non uv clear, to using high quality polyester filler, air tools, the highest quality paint I can find, and every tool I need to do the stuff. FORTUNATELY the most expensive part of these jobs is TIME and I have all kinds of time.

Energy is the only thing lacking right now. Eugh.

Yikes, maybe we should start an OCD/Escalation of commitment club...

Darth have you been spying on me. Just completed a trans and front end rebuild, and have new T27 torx, etorx socket set, box cribs, c-clamps & PVC (to disassemble drums), and an offset ball joint separator to show for it. Have spent nearly double in parts and tools over what I paid for the car and there is still plenty to do...

Good thing you have the time Jamos, wish you best of luck with the energy. But look at the bright side, there are worse ways to stay out of trouble...

You guys are awesome! Or..... crazy. I'm literally looking at my retirement before I have the time to get as deep as you do in body work.
