Can you clean the HFM? With what?

The wafer in mine actually looked a little dirty, will electronics cleaner work? Alcohol?

Electronics cleaner can't hurt. Don't use anything that leaves a residue behind, such as Color TV Tuner cleaner. Products like that leave a lubricant behind. Blow dry with dry compressed air, dry nitrogen, or canned air/freon for computers. DO NOT touch anything in there with anything, not even a paper towel. You will cause more harm than good.

The wire that actually measures airflow heats up to burn itself clean before every start.

Do you have an oiled filter? This may explain the dirt.
