Seat Controls / Switch works in Reverse

The control switch on my sport seats with memory works in reverse. (Forward is back, up is down, etc.) Has anyone encountered and solved a similar problem?

    Here the same http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...rols-backwards
First of all check all the plugs in front and rear of the seat and mirror memory module under the seat. There might be some broken plugs and exposed wires.
I solved once the problem by replacing the seat and mirror module on a friends E32 750, in that case the module was defective.

Thanks Shogun, I followed this thread last week and didn't find anything obviously wrong. Does anyone rebuild control modules?

I had that problem on my comforts when I swapped them left to right. I just reversed the wires at the switch. Not sure if that's a solution for memory seats though.

My driver's memory seat does the same. Never bothered me enough to fix it, though it would be interesting to know exactly what's causing it. I'll do some investigating on my car.

Interesting - Which wires did you reverse?

I now remember that it wasn't the switch wires but the wires to the motors that I reversed. I didn't have the little tool to pull the pins out of the connectors so I just cut the wires and swapped them. There's a nifty little tool available that will allow you to pull the round pins out of bmw connectors. Anyway it was only the seat base motors that I needed to reverse. The back worked fine.

FYI - Contacted Programinc over the weekend, unfortunately they cannot repair this module. Reply is below:

"Thank you for your inquiry but unfortunately we are not able to Repair that module. Please take a look at our website for further product inquiries. Have a lovely Monday and good luck with the module.
    Sincerely,

I sent him a message but no reply. Anyone else can try to repair seat and mirror memory modules from the forum specialists?

stereoinstaller1 tell us that majority of faults are bad solder joints http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...7#post27019167
Andrew, 99% of module issues are bad solder joints. You got skills, get busy. LMK if I can help

I have asked a friend in Germany who also owns an E34 for a possibility to repair the modules, actually there are 3 versions, depending on production year and they look quite different. He has a radio and TV repair shop and would like to have some pics of the inside of these modules to see what's inside, if somebody has pics or can make, pls post here. I am trying to get a defective one shipped to him, still looking for one in Germany to have low shipping cost.

Shogun - Below are photos, intentionally large, of the defective unit I removed from my touring. Let me know if you need more.

Thanks, will pass them on to the electronic expert. This seems to be the latest version, there are 3:

    New Version: 61358356510: from 03/93, used in E34, E31, E32
Old Version(s): BMW 61311378662 (Bosch 3 137 211 006): used up to 25.04.90, then replaced by 61351388561 (interchangeable). Used only in E34 accdg. to ETK (seems to be a bit strange, as not listed for E32, probably an error in the ETK)
    BMW 61351388561 (Bosch 3 137 211 012) : replaced from 25.04.1990 the p/n 61311378662, used in E34, E32 und E31

Read about another case on the German E32 forum, also suddenly working in reverse. Is there any update now that someone could repair his module?

More reports about reverse working SMM modules on the German forum.
Is there meanwhile an update with repairs? DIY or a shop which does it?

My driver's seat headrest suddenly started doing this (on the 08/93 build date e32). After fiddling around with it I found that I can "trick" it by setting a memory position somewhere in the middle then adjusting it near one of the endpoints manually, then holding the memory position button I programmed it to. The headrest will move the wrong direction initially, then reverse itself to go to the correct set point. From there on the manual adjustment works in the correct direction but only until I turn the car off, then it's reversed again. It's really weird. Obviously something is wrong with the memory module under the seat. Not sure what the root cause is though and I probably don't care enough to fix it. I wonder if this module can be reset through INPA/DIS through the diagnostic port?

I’m looking to purchase the module for the driver’s seat. Looked up in realoem. My car is 1991 735iL built in March 1991. I noticed there are other modules with different part numbers. Are these different modules interchangeable?

I also inquired about repairing the module and there is a company in Seattle that claims they can repair it for less than $200.

use your VIN and find the correct part number for that part on reloem, copy that number, then go to the start of realoem again and paste it into search by part number, and it will show you in which model the same part was used and with which other p/n's that p/n is interchangeable or not.
