Or broken rear coil springs rather common...happened to mine, they break off or bottom end and then slip over the bottom plate of the strut.

The car rides smooth and quite. There is a three finger gap in my front suspension which looks terrible in my opinion. I've never seen a e60 sport with so much wheel gap. I think the previous owner may have had the front struts replaced with something different than oem.

That could be the issue too. Two types of struts can provide possibly two different ride heights. Might be a good idea to invest in a new set up to fix the issue or go back to OEM in the front. ST has a pretty sweet $150 rebate right now on coil overs. Can check out the coil overs here.
