Well, i did it. I built 3 piece custom roadstars.

PROJECT IS 100% COMPLEE

I accomplished my original goals in their 100% finished forms with no other revisions planned.

18" flat flat lip
19" stepped lip

The two versions use the same identical center forging, same center design, but the machining is unique between the 18" and 19" wheels. Utilizing the same center design, the brake clearance potential is as good for the 18" wheels, as it is for the 19" when it comes to 14" brake applications.

For those interested in these wheels for your own car, custom widths, offsets are unlimited between 18x8 to 19x12. I have worked with the machinist and manufacturer (Schott wheels, Gardena CA) to get the pricing down as low as possible. For most finishes they are $1100 per wheel. Plus actual shipping costs to your location. The most expensive set I have spec'd for my self with titanium hardward, and a chrome powdercoat finish on all parts ran about an additional $400 per wheel. Wheel weight range I have measure my self, including valve stems runs about as low as 21 lbs for a 18x9, up to the heaviest 24.75 for a 19x11.5".

We surpassed 1000 posts, which I suppose means the old thread ends. I think it was appropriate anyways given the state of the project. The 4 year journey has been well documented here: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...iece-Roadstars.

As of today, the first set is well on its way to completion with verification of the first two prototype centers.

I am so pleased with the final design, and am happy to say every original goal has been met:

1. Design that properly honors the original Roadstar Wheel
2. Reverse Mount center (harder than I thought)
3. Wheel center that clears Brembo 14" Front, and 13" rear brakes while offering maximum backspacing available.
4. High Quality, Light Weight. Currently, the wheel center weighs between 9-9.5 lbs depending on hub pad thickness.
5. Reasonable Cost. Depending on size, and Volume, between $4600-6900 a set plus special finishing and hardward options (polishing/painting/Powdercoating included).

We have started an interest list, that will eventually be brought over here.

Currently, we are at least a month away from taking official orders and deposits. None have been taken yet.

During this whole process, everything changed when I met the very talented 3D scanning artist and modeler Kevin Schiedle, owner of Meshwerks. We became equal partners on this project, and will continue to work together under the name Icon Forged Wheels. We have also partnered with very a reputable wheel machinist. For now, we are managing all of the assembly and finishing of all of the parts, which involves several specialized sub contractors. Each of which are very reputable.

18" Flat Lipped (utilizes the identical same center design, slightly different machining for a interference fit for the 18" hoops, which are a bit larger. Center will also look like a reverse mount center, but will actually be a sandwich. The original thought that we could literally swap shells between the centers, and convert them back and forth, but that didn't work out.








Brake Fitment Pics. Looking for a very OEM tight, hugging design, which also allows for the largest lips possible with or without big brakes:





All of the wheel pictures above are raw low resolution machined to verify fitment. Everything verified. Centercap fitment, hub centricity is very tight, caliper clearance is perfect, offset was as specified.
I just shipped off the ABS plastic centers to a friend with a coupe with Alcon 355 brakes, and will be verifying clearance to those. If anyone would has a different brake setup, we would love to send out our abs plastic centers to verify fitment. A small deposit would be required, and full refund of it upon return.

Its all very exciting. This wheel design by its nature is something very unusual for the wheel machine world.

It won't be an identical process. It will be as close as we can get it without asking the finisher to do something that is an experiment. It will be a powder coat.

FWIW the original shadow chrome was black powdercoat base, with a special translucent silver paint over top. I think you could get 90% of the look without any guesswork by having a gloss black powdercoat base and a silver paint mixed with clearcoat on top, then clearcoat over that. Not sure if that would be too much $$$ though, but I'd love the shadow chrome centers and that's what I'd go for if available.

I think you could get 90% of the look without any guesswork by having a gloss black powdercoat base and a silver paint mixed with clearcoat on top, then clearcoat over that. Not sure if that would be too much $$$ though, but I'd love the shadow chrome centers and that's what I'd go for if available.

That's of course an option but I just think it'd be cheaper having them done before being sent out. ie. instead of having a finish applied to the wheels, then stripped, then new one applied - just do the chrome shadow right off the bat. I haven't seen it mentioned being available though, so I'll probably go with one of the finishes that will be offered. Then maybe down the road get something else done to em.

Yup, Prince Wheel, but there is also a shop in Phoenix near me that does the finish just as well. I have some wheels at the shop local to me right now and am considering taking a few sets of Roadstars I have there to get refinished. The shop near me mostly focuses on powder coating airplane equipment

If I were still in CA I'd send them to Rite Way Wheels in Walnut Creek. They replicate the process and it looks 100% identical to OEM. That said, it's $200/wheel...so...I'll probably take whatever finish is available for these at the group buy price!

Anything we do will be covered by a 5 year finish warranty. Are you saying the chrome shadow BMW finish had issues. Yes, I can't wait for these to roll down the road.

Regardless of what the actual demand is on these wheels, its so much fun to want. In this case, it's going to be better to have. Just like z3m ownership. The tease has lasted long enough. Time to wrap it up.

Hopefully someone posts some good pics with Alcon brakes clearing the superstar centers. I'm waiting on that now. They were delivered today....

R888's are good sticky tires. I can't wait to see them on your wheels. I honestly like the Nitto NT01's a bit better but they come in such odd sizes that it makes it hard to find a decent stagger front to rear.
