I'm not sure. When this engine was assembled the rings were gapped to .028. I doubt it was a ring butting. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some detonation though. The 91 octane available around here isn't exactly race fuel. I really need to finish setting up the methanol injection kit. It would probably help a lot when it comes to keeping stock pistons in one piece.

What kinda timing are you running? You ever considered e85 or is there even any around your area?

I'm at 13* after about 3 psi all the way out. It seems that that's a little too much. E85 doesn't exist anywhere near where I live. That would be the key...

I would ramp it up to 13* or safer it's about one degree per pound of boost. are you running iat sensor?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by ramp it up to 13*. The table drops drastically as soon as the car goes into boost. The stockish timing table (out of boost) has roughly 28-30* at light load and no boost. As soon as it sees about 3 psi it drops to 13*. I know it could be a lot less drastic in regard to how fast timing gets pulled, but I did it under the guise of being "safe." I'm all ears for other suggestions though.

Yes I'm running an IAT, temps are usually within 10* of ambient. Under boost it climbs, but I haven't seen anything that's overly concerning as far as out of control temps.

I knew running 13.8 psi on 91 octane without the methanol injection/ E85/ race fuel was a recipe for disaster. Plenty of cars have a really similar combo, they make 700+ to the tires but they spray a healthy amount of methanol/ water or run E85 / Race fuel. 700 wheel on pump gas is way too much.

I got lucky this time around. This being said, a few changes are in order. Timing is going to be lowered when it's over 10 psi. I'm thinking max of 10-11*. The methanol injection is going to be hooked up. I was being a cheap ass and didn't buy the solenoid. Hell, I have the Dominator that will easily control this.

I have a gender reveal slated for this car. A massive burnout is an absolute must. Pink or blue doesn't matter, but the damn burnout had better be epic!!! Live and learn my friends!

I found something floating around the tech forum that might help you understand what I'm talking about. The drastic drop In Timing might account for that piston ending up like that (that really sucks! ) I think you did get really lucky you have a pretty easy fix.

Need some videos wana see this thing doing a big nasty burnout. Congrats by the way.

.028 should have been fine for ring gaps if that is what they were at. E85!

That's good info. You will find it amusing that my timing table came directly from the Denmah. :-)

The timing settings were borrowed from his old white 6.0 work truck. It appears some research is in order.

They are definitely at .028. I wish E85 was an option around here. The closest station is 3.5 hours away.

Damn. 91 octane and no e85...that is rough. I am not a big fan of meth because one mistake can ruin your setup but you are in a position where it is the best bet. Why not make a big cell for it with a sending unit on a very early triggered warning light? Now that you have seen those power levels there is no way you are going to want to go to a much safer number. What was your compression ratio just out of curiosity?

Broken piston is out! You can actually do this without pulling the engine. 6 crossmember bolts and a little bit of convincing made just enough room to pull the pan off. The rod and bearings look fine and will be reused. I hate waiting for parts. :-)

You are correct. I have a methanol system already setup, just didn't hook it up yet. Major lapse in judgement in my part. This is not going to be used as an augmented fuel system. The goal is to help cool the air charge a little and try to keep the Pistons a little cooler. Hopefully it will help prevent this from happening again. One other thing I can do with the Holley is add fuel and pull timing on individual cylinders.

Make no mistake about it, car is fun at this power level. 10 years ago I would have added the methanol, lowered timing and upped the boost. Go big or go home type of mentality. Now, I have a baby due in March. I would like the car to be running. If it's not, it may become a paperweight for a while. Priorities are starting to shift already. I'm already abandoning the brake upgrade & headlight projector upgrade. The stock brakes and headlights work well enough. The good news is the car is scheduled to be used for our gender reveal. It needs to run in order to annihilate the colored tires!

hahaha love the tire smoke reveal. Does the holley have the ability to load multiple tunes that can be changed with a knob? With my Pro EFI I have 5 different settings of boost I can have that adjusts anything else I want with it. So you could have a "kill" setting that uses the meth and then like a 11lb cruise around setting or whatever you think is safe. I am sure there is a way to do it with the holley. Even the Miller war chip can do that. I completely agree with the balls to the wall thing. I want to be able to turn my car up when I am willing to risk it but I want it to have a totally safe cruising mode that would make it from coast to coast if I wanted to.

Yes, the Holley has "Multi-map selector." It's essentially a cheap key lock. It gives the ability to swap tunes.

    Turbo 6.0 E39

Making some progress! Swapped the replacement piston onto the original rod. Also ordered a replacement cylinder head as I'm not comfortable putting the chewed up one back on.

    Edit:

The piston is in! The remaining portion of the lower end will be buttoned up tomorrow. Waiting on parts after that (cylinder head).

That should be "boost friendly" for sure! Cheap too fix too. Looks like you dodged a big bullet.

The compression is certainly boost friendly. Stock Pistons are a gamble, especially with a lot of power. As much as it pains me, I'm going to back the boost down. Luck was on my side this time. It's probably best not to push it.

I love that! Never thought I would be saying I have to back it down to ONLY 600 hp. Kind of puts things into perspective!

Progress! Replacement head is on the car. Cleaned it up, swapped springs and lapped the valves.
