vehicle speed senor = wheel speed sensor?

My 98 328 is showing fault code P0500 - vehicle speed sensor, malfunction.

Both my ASC and ABS lights stay on continually. From what I have read in this awesome forum, I have to assume there is a correllation between the lights and the fault code.

I have seen references to the wheel speed sensor in threads but not a "vehicle speed sensor". Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I have to believe they are one in the same. Are they?

    Thanks for any help!

I think that the vehicle speed sensor is located on the differential.

You are right! Thanks. I got so dependent on the forum before I obtained a Bentley manual that I forgot to refer to it!

Is it logical that a bad vehicle speed sensor (or sender) might be all the ABS and ASC lights are telling me is wrong? Apparently the only way to know for sure is to go to the $tealer and have them scan the ABS module, correct?
