Thanks Daryl! I'll send you a message about the bbq, we should get that figured out soon so we can work on your car.
As for me, it turned out the backing plates were merely too close and making noise.

I love this build. I have said it before, but I really like your engine setup. Keep it up.
on Sunday I decided to finally swap to the '85 fuel rail
1984 on top, 1985 on bottom
new regulator
making a block off plate
ready for install
on
All this and it's still dieseling... next step is checking the actual fuel pressure

JP my memory is not what it used to be - but I seem to remember that dieseling has to do with air leaking? But this is with a carb and not injection.

Yeah, that's my confusion as well since I've never really dealt with dieseling on a fuel injected setup.
In theory there is one port I blocked on the M20 throttle body that could have a vacuum leak, but it shouldn't be this bad. I guess I can take it off and have my buddy who knows aluminum weld it up.
My main guess is the used Volvo injectors I have are just leaking after I shut it down. I think the 600 miles I got out of them is good enough to prove they work, now I'll get some rebuilt ones.
If that doesn't solve it I'm ditching the E21 fuel pump/accumulator and going to the E30 setup

Nice engine build and very good narrative. It take a lot to keep this thread update and I appreciate it.
Thanks! Honestly, I keep it updated merely so I can look back and see what I've done
---
Fuel pump/accumulator/filter bushings replaced
30+ year old ones, surprisingly still decent although one was about to fall apart
Rack bushings c/o Eurometric
Edit: Tony walked up to me while I was doing the rack bushings and said something to the effect of "your car is actually worth money now, but only because you have about 1000hrs on it. Are you trying to be like me?"
I laughed and pointed out the diff in my car used to be in his 2002.

been a while since I updated this
tinkered with it some more, finished my break in miles, need to install my headers and some 2.25 exhaust
^ real owner of my cars
It's not running at 100%, but we're going to the dyno on Monday. Should be interesting
^ real owner of my cars
Nice
So... the aftermarket cat I had installed 3 years ago started blowing chunks on the dyno. I guess it's time to install the headers and build an exhaust, then go back to the dyno. The only reading we got today was 115whp

115 is not too bad
Kathy and I had the cat issue happen to us in Santa Barbara at bimmerfest 2007 or so, car stopped running in the middle of Saturdays drive.
Took some work but I was able to break it out and drive home on Sunday. It is amazing how poorly an engine runs with a plug up the exhaust....
Looking forward to the next dyno tune day results JP.

Yeah, now all my weird issues over the last 100 or so miles make sense

is it still dieseling?
i had the same issue with my car, it was a ignition power issue, i fixed it by wiring in a relay, so when u pull they key out, the dahm engine doesn't keep ideling,,
anyway food for thought
i like your build thread by the way
So I sorted my dieseling out...
Apparently my car only likes 100 octane. Luckily there is a station down the street that has race gas at the pump
^ real owner of my cars
what are you running for compression/timing?
Tom D
77 e21 - m42
88 e30m3
04 330 dinan3
84 r1000rt
02 r1150rs
all of them gray
14 f800gsa - red headed stepchild!
I have to ask Ben about timing, compression is 11.5:1
^ real owner of my cars
LOL ! 11.5:1 ahahaha I'm sitting here reading the thread trying to think of what could be causing the dieseling. Did not realize your compression was so high.
Thats sweet Had the same thing happen on a friends built vw 16v. Would diesel on 93 octane, turns out the compression was around 12:1.
Ok - not to be different - ok I am different.
Not sure octane will cause dieseling? All I have read leads to either too fast an idle or tons for carbon build up that gets hot enough to fire off the fuel. The more compression the easier it is for the later to happen. But not sure you have carbon build up already JP?
Not sure how to read the dyno graph you put up - but it looks like the engine is running really rich if I am 17 to 18 air/fuel ratio?
Back in the day (my youth) muscle cars were coming out of the factories with 11.5 / 12.5 to 1 compression and iron heads. Premium was leaded 102 octane at all stations, pinging was our biggest issue but I do remember dieseling happening now and then.

Daryl, higher octane burns cooler. I think the 91 was causing the head to heat up too much. The 100 solved it, but now I have to pay $9/gal for gas
Edit: I need to see if I can run lead. Aviation 110 is leaded, but only like $6/gal

Our carbed M20 at 11 to 1 will run on 91 ok?
Maybe it is too lean - lean will make it run hot also.
I just can not remember stuff any more LOL

11:1 is probably the limit for what can run pump gas, but I assume you're running our good old CA corn diluted 91. If I was you I would pour a few gallons of 100 in your tank to bring the overall octane up. Just remember, carbs don't like our crap gas these days.
Damn... that would be nice
