Did you bake the pulley after painting?
I have chipping issues whenever I try to paint engine components. Even with primer and clear coat.
    No problem.

I did not bake it, I just used a heat gun to help it set. I probably should put it in the oven... maybe I'll do that

few more last things... head actually on/timing set. Need to pull a tii distributor out of the pile and check it out/install. Will physically install the engine tomorrow and deal with fine tuning later.

you might notice that my stock downpipe/cat has been removed, headers sitting out for test fitting

btw, I finally mounted my bumper correctly (nyloc ftw)

    ready for the new engine

    Great thread, thanks for posting!

    Couple questions

Is it easier to install the bare long block, then put on the injection, etc? Seems like it would be easier to install the intake, injection etc on the stand then install in car, but I don't know. I've done this with aircooled porsches, on those you have to install everything first because of such limited engine bay access.

Roughly how much does a shop charge to machine, etc the block, prep the crank and the rods? What did you have done to the block crank and rods?

    Thanks!

The city car sitting next to mine is a CSL that a customer bought last year. Most of the cars in the showroom belong to my buddy Carl, there's an Isetta in there that belongs to a customer, a Moto Guzzi that belongs to one of his friends, and a 2.7 911 that belongs to a friend who is remodeling his garage and needed somewhere to keep it temporarily. The cars in the yard are an assortment of Carl's personal stuff, friends, and customer cars.

I think it's easier to install it this way, I can maneuver the block around easy while it is hanging in order to get everything lined up. It took a few minutes to get it to engage the trans, I think it would have been much harder to do that if all the ancillaries were installed. If you go from the bottom like a Porsche/VW then you might as well install everything first.

Machine shop was about $500. They hot tanked my parts, decked & bored block, balanced rods, balanced & polished crank, valve job & mild porting on head

I got the cooling system finished. I might swap the 90A alternator for a 80A because the 90 is hard mounted to the bracket. I think 80 is more than enough and will have the benefit of bushings.

beautiful work (and great background scenery in your photos!)

you're going to have to dress up that brake booster to match the engine though

    Thanks gents!

Yes Tom, I did end up with that bar. A friend of mine in the bay texted it to me when it was first posted on craigslist but I didn't get it in time. I managed to pick it up after it was posted on here. I actually don't like it that much and will likely end up having my buddy who is amazing at aluminum welding make me something similar to my Mason tii brace.

    ---

It may not look like I did much, but I accomplished a decent amount today

    M20 throttle body/adapter dealt with

    went to the junkyard: got a spare MAF, a 6 wire MAF connector/pigtail, 2x 3 wire TPS connector/pigtail, 2x M30B35 idle control valve, SuperETA 3 wire O2 sensor connector/pigtail

When we were installing the engine I think I managed to mess up the threads on my driver's side motor mount, replaced with an early E21 mount (longer stud/I think it has more rubber) because it was in stock. Also 'installed' the water divider and truly installed the stock exhaust (for now until I modify the headers). A 2002tii 002 distributor has also been used.

new E30 M10 alternator tensioner bracket

new poly bushings, new 888x10 v-belt. I think I may order a 875x10 as the 865x10 was too short.

here's the reason for my amusement. about a year ago I was helping a friend stuff a M20B25 into his E21 315 and I was holding that same bar. I knew he had sold it, but I wasn't sure were it went until I saw it in your picture. at the time I called jay over at GC and asked him about it, he conveniently couldn't remember. it must have been really early in his career and he either didn't know how to weld aluminum or couldn't afford to have someone do it for him.

The reason why I'm choosing the 591 unit is that is a much easier version to chip. Apparently the 541 can be done as well, but not as easily. Hahahaha... we've been joking about it since I got it. We wondered why it was bolted together. Our long standing joke has been why they didn't use 2-4 more bolts. Honestly I'm not sure if I can use it anymore because the M30 ICV is in the way. I no longer need the cold start injector so once I make a block off plate and turn the ICV I might have enough room to clear the bar, we shall see
