There's a parameter, OFFSET_GESAMTWEGSTRECKE, which decrements the cluster's mileage by upto 255km (mainly for when a car is moved in the factory and then reset back to 0 and such). So when it subtracts a number from 0, it ends up reading the approximate max value the cluster supports (minus a few km)

26xxxx is a very low max value though. I imagine someone would have mentioned the cluster stopped incrementing if that really was the max..
Yeah, I don't know why it reads what it does, but I bet there are a few out there with over 621k miles that haven't complained either. The reason is that the number needs to be that to sync the parameters, but that doesn't mean the values can't go beyond that number.

621371 miles (999999 km) is definitely the maximum on m35080 clusters, even with new ones like the E9x.

So what happens when a car reaches that?

I'm thinking it just keeps counting. Plenty of people with more than 260k miles on 2000 model e39s. Probably less 01+ e39s with 621k miles.

You win extra prizes if your number of power steering hose replacements is > 50 and if you have NOT replaced the valve cover or valley pan gaskets more than twice.

And if you still have the original fan clutch.

The m35080 stops counting. The EEPROM doesn't really have enough space to count much beyond that (mileage is stored in the first 32 bytes as 16 16-bit words; maximum that counter can possibly go to is 1048576, but the cluster software stops counting at 999999).

I haven't seen a dump of a 93s66 eeprom, so I'm not sure what the maximum possible value is

There probably aren't many E39s that made it that far, let alone forum members. For one to hit that today, it would require an 01 model to have been driven ~45k miles a year every year.

That is what I have, but it won't erase the mileage and it's much easier to just swap the chip to a new one.

Do i replace the m35080 with a new m35080 or do i replace with the 93S66?

I just bought a 320d touring 2001 model. and the cluster has been replaced and the original is gone. I have a higher milage in the used replacement cluster and my DSC is not working. I really need to change the vin nr and km reading so everything is as it should. Everything on the odometer works but i have not checked any part nr. But i can tell from my ews and lcm that my actual milage is 60k less than the cluster shows.

You will need to replace a M35080 with a M35080 or a 93s66 with a 93s66. They are not interchangeable due to wiring differences.

Paul this makes my head hurt thinking about it haha. I started searching for a used cluster and I've only found one. Is there a good place to find these?

LOL, if you're looking for a used M5 cluster, I just got one that needs pixel repair that I could offer you. PM me if you're interested.

Hey guys, I just wanted to say that I've updated the original post with some newly discovered information on the locations of the VIN and mileage in both the M35080 and 93S66 hex code. This is a much cleaner way of restoring the old software while keeping the mileage and VIN uncoded. I'll be adding some additional information to it soon with how to clear the ZCS information as well, so effectively after performing the whole DIY, you'll have an uncoded cluster just like buying one from the dealer. I need to do some more verifying before adding it.

I also made a PDF of the DIY for easy printing and it's also a bit easier to read.

As always, if anyone needs additional help or it's too intimidating, PM me.

    Hello blacknight530i;

Can you help me please with hex editor: I would like to change ODO in hex file, but I don't understand how pattern for odo works; here is data:
mileage on speedo is: 416406 km
0x040 to 0x04B looks like this:
    25 ED 2D 14 8C 6F 25 ED 2D 14 8C 6F

Mileage which I would like to have after changing and coding 93s66 eeprom is:
    256666 km
What is HEX code for this mileage?

I manage to change VIN since I understand from your description how pattern for Vin works.

    Thanks a milion.

    Hi,

does anybody knows how to write 256666 km in hex mode to correct 93s66 eeprom?
original eeprom has following data stored in 0x040 to 0x04B
    25 ed 2d 14 8c 6f 25 ed 2d 14 8c 6f
    which is 416406 km.

what is hex value for 256666 km?

    thanks

You can use a program called Tachsoft to get it. I can get it for you a bit later.
