Doing some engine upgrades - cam, heads, headers, intake porting. Looking for +100hp, at least.

Not yet. I've more than blown my budget for this project, so I'm not looking to spend a bunch, and I still need to order chromoly pushrods once I measure for the proper length.

Canfield heads. What cam and intake are you going with?

I having tmoss port my Explorer intake, cam is a custom grind from FTI - high lift, low duration. Should work well with the high-flowing heads while maintaining stock pistons. Building long-tube headers and exhaust based on Pipemax-recommended sizes and lengths. 1-5/8 primaries, 3" collectors, 2-1/4" header back, x-pipe, Thrush (Flowmaster-style chambered) 2-into-2 muffler.

FTI never replied to my email.
I'm going megasquirt later this year and was debating if I should build a stroker engine or boost the one I have. Or ball out and build a stroker dart block and boost that, lol

    Stroker! Stroker! Stroker!

Coast High Performance has changed ownership, but I heard 3 of their guys went here: http://cprparts.com/specials.html

I was sorely tempted by the Dart blocks, but they weigh 60% more than the stockers. Plus I think I will start breaking T5s before I start breaking stock 302 blocks. And all the other transmission options seem to be 60% heavier than the T5.

I've toyed with the idea of Dart blocks before, but for the price, you're well into Aluminum LS or Coyote territory.

Passenger side done, it's been finish welded, still need to finish the slip joints and decide how picky I want to be about dressing the welds. The driver's side is going to be fun - ABS pump, steering shaft, brake lines, clutch fork, slave cylinder, and the dipstick are all going to make this...interesting. I was shooting for a 33" primary length and on the passenger header, all but one tube ended up right around 33". I've already figured out the driver's side will land wherever it wants to - I don't have room to be picky about runner lengths.

Impressive. Just remember you are saving 500-1800 from buying them from someone pre-made...

Well, if anyone even made these things, but I'm not aware of anyone that does. The header tubing kit was $84 from Speedway Motors, the flanges are 351 flanges and were $20 each, I redrilled them for the spread bolt pattern. The collectors were $37 each, and I bought three extra tight-radius j-bends for $17 each, so I'm into the headers around than $250. I bought a couple of bungs, some 3" tubing for the collector, some 3" to 2.25" 3-bolt collector flange reducers, I'm reusing some of the 2.25" tubing that I had in my header-back exhaust already, I still have some 2.25" straight tubing and a 2.25" mandrel j-bend left over from originally doing the exhaust, a dual-in-dual-out 2.25" muffler, and a pair of tips. I'm looking at about $100 for the header-back portion. I sold the old Borla catback on Craigslist for $200 so I'm really not doing too bad on this part of the project (but don't ask me about the engine).

Which header tubing kit did you use? I ended up buying a jegs generic long tube header set on Amazon for $125 and modifying it accordingly for space.

16GA tubing, 3" radius bends, welds nicely. I ordered a few of these, 16GA j-bends with a 2" radius for the extra tight stuff.

I spent two weeks looking for tubing that wasn't stupid expensive and never saw this. Good for future reference though if I decide to go turbo later on

Yeah, I had something saved in my Summit wish list for a long time but somehow stumbled on Speedway. Never shopped there before but their prices were killer on this, the collectors, and some other exhaust pieces - probably saved me $100 over Summit.

They sell a big box-o-pipe kit for exhaust cheap, like $150 shipped, that is 16g mild steel with 4 each of 4-foot straights, 45 degree bends, 90 degree bends, and 180 degree bends. It cannot be beat for trial-and-error setups. Then once I'm done I can decide whether I want to rebuild in aluminized, or just keep recoating to stay ahead of the rust.

NICE work on the headers. Very fun.

    Intakes are back from porting.

Passenger side header is fully welded minus the slip joints. I ran out of welding gas and had to grab another bottle. Next step is to pull the engine back out, shim the trans input shaft, install the clutch/flywheel for real, and prep the driver's side of the car for the header by heat shielding the brake lines and trimming the engine mount, bellhousing, clutch fork, and slave cylinder bracket.

Is that stainless, and if so, what's the part number for the MIG wire you used? And the shield gas . . . .

Nope, mild steel. I have Eastwood's internal header coating kit and a "ceramic" coating for the outside that I've had good results with. I have a line on a TIG setup but it's not ready yet, plus mild is a fraction of the cost and I'm a cheapass.

A ceramic coating that sticks? Care to share? It's not like we compete in the same region.

It's the parts store header paint stuff, Rustoleum maybe? Prepped and cured on a motorcycle header and it worked well. I won't be able to throw these into the oven like I did for the motorcycle header, so I'll have to cure via an electric heater like I did for the engine block.

I also got some header wrap to make sure I'm not boiling brake fluid or fuel.
