    Intake Resonator Tank (silencer) Delete:

    What?

    get 'er out of there!

    Why?

well biggest reason to remove the resonator tank is it is a air leak source. there is a loose hose connecting the intake hose to the resonator tank. This hose can and often does leak.

    Here are some pics:

first here is the resonator tank. This can be eliminated.

    20180408_014430.jpg

The following pics show what I came up with to "plug" the hole in the intake hose.

    20180415_024407.jpg

    What is that?

    Yep, a chair leg glide/cap.

    20180404_153148.jpg 20180405_173013.jpg

Now if you want to do this the right way, you can buy a BMW hose for a different model (I don't recall which) that doesn't have that "port" with a hose connecting to a resonator tank. The part number is: 12-71-1-432-409 and costs about $60 ECSTuning.com has them. Anyway, I'll go with my chair plug and see how it goes.

Guys, it has been a long time; another 3 months since my last post/activity.

Yesterday, I began organizing the shop to get ready to resume the project. I hope to begin this week and am shooting for getting it on the road in a couple weeks. Technically it is possible. But you know me...

I have some sad news to share. I have noted before that my wife wasn't well and that I took care of her; that is why this project has taken over 5 years. Well she passed away a couple months ago. I am feeling a sadness and loneliness that I never imagined. But she is finally free of misery and at peace with the Lord.

I bought the car in late 2004 and it quickly became my hobby; not just a driver. But 5 years ago, my nephew was interested in it and since I didn't have time (since taking care of my wife) I figured I'd sell it to him for cheap and work with him to fix and mod things. It would be time we could spend together and I would still be playing with my hobby. But for the same reason I justified selling it; no time, the build was moving too slowly for my nephew to wait - so he bought a different car. Then his younger brother became interested - but he too lost interest. At that time, I decided to keep the car and continue the build - it was my therapy frankly.

I have been shell shocked with the loss of my wife; we had been married for 29 years and together 34 (through college). It is time for me to return to my project, to my therapy. I look forward to resuming the work. There is a lot to do still. In fact, it will take me a bit to remember where I am with it and what remains to be done. Reassembly of the engine bay for starters (alternator, ac compressor, tensioners, belts, radiator...etc.

Here is a picture from last night after doing some cleaning and organizing of my storage unit shop. I have a little more organizing to do and I need to make a trip to the junkyard this week to pick up a few things. I look forward to posting the progress again.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your wife.

Therapy comes in all forms and in somethings you least expect when you lose a loved one. Especially someone so, so close to you.

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress. Take your time, be patient and remember in the end, it's just a car. No matter what happens, it can be fixed eventually.

THANKS VERY MUCH EVERYONE! Your comments mean a lot. Wrenching again and sharing my progress here again will be a bit of relief, a distraction from the emptiness. I have been very busy over the past couple of months since she passed. I am trying to keep active, keep buy, being productive, doing something. I don't work because I only took care of her. I will need to resume a career.......but for now I need to get myself and my life back on solid ground.

I will begin working on the car again soon. My goal (I always have them, lol), will be to get it on the road in a few weeks.

    Thanks again and stay tuned!

A little movement. I have been organizing the shop and my parts a little (very little). I have some parts on order (today received the belt tensioner pulley arm).

I took my wheels off and took them to a tire shop for balancing and to repair a slow leak in the driver rear.

I have purchased a new Behr radiator a few months ago. I decided to do it to be thorough, as I seem to be replacing nearly everything. Well it was 11 years old (well 6 of them getting driving, lol). I was going to sell the old radiator to make a few bucks, but figured I better get it leak tested.

Low and behold, it had a leak. It was leaking out of one of the end caps. WOW! Well that explains sign of a leak that I had observed under the radiator and the failed leak pressure tests. Glad I spent the $10 to check it out; I would have hated to sell that to someone, plus it answers the unsolved coolant leak.

It has been a long time..........9 months since here last

Hey everyone! How's it going? Remember me? I am still out here.

I am losing count, but I think my build project is now over 6 years old! I haven't touched it for a long time; not really at all since my wife passed last year

Haven't even been to this forum in 9 months. But starting to get the itch to get back to it...

    is it time? maybe so...

I took a look at the ole project today and snapped a few pics. sad state of affairs to see it under all that dust and stuff piled all around it.

Think I'll start cleaning up the "shop" and get organized. I sure would like to get this on the road.. yes, maybe it is time!

Stay tuned.........I hope more to come as the story resumes/continues...

Was reading this post and my heart goes out to you regarding your wife. I lost my wife all of a sudden 2 years ago due to cancer after 30 years of marriage. I understand the lifestyle oh so well after such a loss. So much we probably have in common there. But I will tell you one thing........ the distraction of E38 ownership has been a blessing. This land yacht and all it's issues has been a continuous distraction and a passion since it arrived not so long ago. Wrenching, cursing, laughing and bringing her back has been therapeutic I tell you.

Oh my I revisited this thread because I saw it up top, and must not have looked at this in over a year. I'm so sorry to hear about your wife. I can't imagine what you're going through. You picked one of the best cars, though, to use as a distraction, because there is literally always going to be something to do. As always, we're here for you, and I'm glad to see you still posting! Good luck, can't wait to see it running!
