So, just got these today, they are huge. 245/40/17 next to a Maxxis 255/40/17 RC1

They are a bit bigger than an R6 too. Ran them at Chuckwalla this past weekend, and the rear fenders required some love with a hammer and jack handle to keep from rubbing.
"Purple crack".
The 225/45/15 A6 and the 225/45/15 R7 are the exact same size. Loved the lack of drop off in the R7 that I always had with the A6
I just saw where Hoosier has a size that I havent seen before. It seems just right for S13s but the specs seem off. 255/35/18 24.8 tall, 10.3 in. tread, 9 in wheel Their 275s have 10.3 in tread.
I had to cut out the inner lip of the rear fenders to fit 245 40 17 R7 or A7's on my GTS2 car. The R7's at also seemed to take a little longer to get up to temp as compared to the R6's. They do seem to last a little longer however.
I didnt take another picture but laying next to a 255/40/17 NTO1 was about the same as the RC1s. The good thing is they fit. My fenders are very rolled and pulled in some areas.

That tire size was built for a "spec" series that had a max tire width of 255. They were liberal in their interpretation of the 255 width and the +/- allowance that the NHTSA gives for measuring tires. I had those tires on 18x9.5 wheels on the car in my avatar. They stuck like glue but I couldn't get the car low enough at the time because I hadn't done fender mods to clear the extra width.

Here is a comparison of a 245 R6 vs 245 R7. The only difference is that the R6 is a 245/40/17 while the R7 is 245/35/18. Technically its just a sidewall difference and width should be same 17 vs 18.
We had to do quite a bit of fender work to fit the R7's and get the height of the car to where we wanted. Had to do evo fenders front and pull A LOT on the rear.
255/35/18 has been around for a while. It was actually considered a cheater tire in NASA TT because it measured closer to a 275... much wider than the 255 number suggests.
Has anyone compared the width difference between a 225/40/17 R7 and a 245/40/17 R7? I know where wasn't much difference between the R6's in the same size, the 225's run WIDE!
Anyone get tire pressures/setup dialed in on the R7s yet? I've heard people say run them higher and others lower than R6.
Ran them the same as the R6s last weekend, but something tells me they have more to give with some adjustment.
I'm curious about this is well, although for 225/45/17. From my usual supplier the 225s are $254 less for a set. A racer compared 225/45/15s for R6 vs R7 and they were almost exactly identical, no real width change. But we all know the 245/40/17 R7 is wide as hell, so I'm curious what the 225/45/17 carcass is like. Hell, if I could find a junk one I'd do it myself, I already got a junk 245/40/17 R7.
I have compared the 225/45 and 225/40 and the 40 series is just a little bit wider when mounted.
What's the scoop on fitting a 245/40/17 R7 on a 17x9" wheel (ARC-8) on an E36?
Anyone know how it compares in width to a 255/40/17 NT01?

Fenders need to be pulled and rolled. Lots of negative camber front and rear. the R7 is at least a half inch wider than the NT01. Its more like a 275. This is next to a 255 Maxxis RC1

Wow, that's no joke. That ain't fitting. My 255 NT01s rub quite a bit in the back.
Thanks

just roll your fenders. I think I beat the inside in some with a Ford tool as well. they fit with no rubbing when i was done. I think I ran a small spacer in the rear as well.

Before I did flares (which meant lots of cutting, swearing, welding the inner sections together, etc) I ran 245 R7s on ARC8 17x9 42 offset wheels with pulling and not just rolling, but grinding off the inner lip of the rear fenders. In order to get the car at a decent ride height, it takes a bit of effort, but is doable without totally hacking up your car. Fronts aren't really a problem, just watch the clearance between the tire/wheel and spring perches.
I think i'll stick with 225s at least for now. Anybody try 225/40r17s for a little gearing advantage?
I run 225/40/17 on 9.5 wheels. I think with my 3.46 diff it comes out to like a 3.55 ratio. Works great at the tracks I’ve run them so far.
