They have a BMW part number now, I bought my black ones from ECS tuning for like $33. They are a few bucks cheaper from some other sources. I'm not aware of a source selling clear ones, maybe best to get a set custom-cut again

Good luck removing the 14 year old ones... you may need it since that is way past the life expectancy of most paint protection vinyls.

$500 actually doesn't sound too bad to remove those provided he can do it without damaging the paint (which frankly may be unavoidable at this point)

The magnetic black ones with the BMW part number are made by the man over at www.roadstersolutions.com which is where I bought mine. The previous owner put some other type on the car (I would guess LeatherZ product) that did not fit exactly right.

There is a whole section on these things in The Manifesto. Search for "spats".

The part number for the BMW magnetic stone guards in black is 82110004829 (LINK), they are also available in silver 82110004828 (LINK).

Ouch. $500 and/or new paint *really * defeats their purpose.

That and some paint safe solvents. I had 3 year old lightly tinted headlight lens covers/protectors that started to bubble and come off of my mini. It took a hour and a half and a can of Citrus Goo Gone to get each one off without damaging the headlights.

Many years ago i removed the "wood" paneling from from my 84 Jeep wagoneer using just a heat gun and a soft plastic scraper.
It took me days and days of very slow progress. The point is that you really have to take your time but not hold the heat in one spot too long.
Citrus Goo Gone sounds like a good idea, but probably want to do a test spot first.

    Good Luck.

Worst case, you do some damage and end up with a repaint. At least you haven't paid the shop to do the damage and then again to paint.

Interesting. I have a portable steamer but since the adhesive layer had turned to a gooey mess I went with a plastic scraper and solvent.

IMO a better approach is to get plastic dip in your choice of black or clear.
Clear the area, mask the shape you want and spray on 3-4 coats.
It is completely harmless to the paint and if you don't like, it peels right off.
I did my entire front bumper with it. After 3 years I just removed it - no problem, paint underneath looks like new.
    Eastwood now makes it http://www.eastwood.com/paints/elastiwrap-coatings.html
More expensive than Plastic Dip at $9.99/can versus $6.99/can at home depot
But the clear plastic dip I tried was too thin and difficult to apply.
In general I've had great success with Eastwood products.
Once the paint drys on my Aerotec bumper I'm going to hit it with the Eastwood Clear

    Any updates?

Not a fan of the black guards personally. Does a clear variant exist? What about a template in the event I was to cut them myself?

I'm sure you can google it but they are a stick on and not easily removed. I've had the black magnetic ones and that's why I like them. Easy clean up

I use the magnetic style, but have taken it on set further by having 3M, Scotch-Lite reflective tape applied to the surface. The stone guards look even better and serve a dual purpose of additional reflective area as well as chip protection. The Scotch-Lite material comes in many colors, I use white on the Alpine car and black on the other color cars. It looks to me that the red Scotch-Lite is a very close match to Imola.

The cost was reasonable and could probably be handled by any sign shop.

But then what do you do to protect the newly refinished fenders? I think the purpose of these things is to avoid having to repaint them

Not when it's 14 yrs old..

Newer tech allows easier removal.. Xpel is the brand that comes to mind.
