    I'll see if I can track down a spare DME for experimenting with. Interesting tidbit, INPA is not recognizing the software version on the DME. Unsure if this is true with all ME 7.2 units, or if it's an artifact of the Dinan tune. It's also not responding at address 0x12.

    Any idea how big of a power supply I'd need to run this out of the car? I know BMW specs a pretty hefty unit for flashing stuff, but what about just day to day operations? I'm also hesitant to do much without the Dinan tune as this is setup for the Dinan MAF and I'm already trying to track down an idle issue.

    They don't consume a lot of power on the bench. I use a 12V 3.25A power supply, and I'm pretty sure that's overkill

    I have a spare ME7.2 DME if you need one. It came out of my 01 740i, but it would need to be virginized to avoid EWS issues. It should work though.

    I snagged the auctioned one for $45, with in-state shipping it should be here Tuesday-ish and hopefully it'll include some pigtails. Look like someone's got no-name oil level sensors for $20, so there's that. I guess it's time to go searching for a bit more wiring.

    Anyone have thoughts on CAN bus analyzers?

    I don't suppose either of you guys has a need to get your car on a lift? I have one at my house if that is enticing to get you here instead

    This is before it was fully finished. It's got heat and AC and lots of power/air now (and yes, the door closes with the 3 cars like that):

    Starting to sound like we need an E39 party here at my house. I can fit about 12-18 cars in the driveway and then one on the lift. Do I hear a spring roll call? We could do a mod/maintenance/fun day. Maybe BBQ, swim (if warm enough) etc.

    You can use an Arduino + one of several Arduino CAN shields available. The Arduino code is included on post #1 on link below. It is posted as a PDF file but is a zip file so just change the extension.

    I use a Beaglebone + CAN cape and CAN-utils software which you can find below. It is linux based.
    https://gitorious.org/linux-can/can-...d221e58e8bb69:

    Btw, I have hooked up an M5 DME (MSS52) and M5 cluster on my bench and the DME does not send out the oil temp data in this state despite having the oil temp sensor and coolant temp sensor connected to it. I'm not sure what more the DME needed in order to send that info. That's not to say it is not possible. I just didn't spend much time trying to get it to work. Oil temp and oil temp lights are on ArbID 545 on bit 4 and 3 respectively.

    Love it. M5 cluster party at Brian's, everyone's invited. I swear if I hadn't just driven through Raleigh last month I'd consider blazing down. But 4k miles in Dec was brutal. Plus I am going to get washed out to sea in about 8 hours if you believe the weather reports so there's that.

    If that happens, I call dibs on M3 vert. I'll have a proper burial for ya, I'll have ya cremated and run your ashes thru an oil change so you'll be in the M3 in spirit.

    Was the DME transmitting anything?

    Also for whatever it's worth,

    Oil temp is ARBID 545 byte 4. Byte 5 is the alternator light. The oil temp lights are bits 4-6 on byte 3

    Oops, that was a typo on my part. I have corrected my post. I do have them on 3 and 4 on my Arduino code.
    Code:
     //*********************send oil temp over CAN-BUS ****************
    void send_temp(int CS_pin) //ARBID 545, send oil temp data to the cluster
    {
      //Can bus data packet values to be sent
      id = 0x545;
      data[0]= 0x00;
      data[1]= 0x00;
      data[2]= 0x00;
      data[3]= oil_LED; //Engine warm up LEDs. Dependent on oil temp
      data[4]= OILvalue2;  // oil temp
      data[5]= 0x00;
      data[6]= 0x0;
      data[7]= 0x0;
      CAN_send(CS_pin);

    }//end Temperature Loop

    It didn't transmit anything useful but then again all I had connected to it was 12V, ground, Can+, Can -, oil temp sensor, and coolant temp sensor. It will send the ArbIDs but the data section will just have 00 e.g. (545 [8] 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00). I finally I just ditched the DME and used my module to send DME messages to the cluster. That worked
