I use F15 as it is more protected. F10 is much more easily scratched as you have seen. Any others are either the same (F16 being the same as F15 for example) or having a totally different shape casing that might not be suitable. Most of us haven't seen others in person and tried to install as it is an expensive gamble. There isn't a good mounting mechanism or bezel option yet, so it's up to you to see which works best for you. Early F10 <2013 had CIC, so don't use that monitor.

Got my HU today. What a disappointment. It was "insulated" with a folded-over piece of cardboard.

Any point in even unwrapping it--can the plug be replaced?
Report that and get some compensation from the delivery company and the seller for poor packaging!

Theshafro makes them for e39s . Piping Rock might have some e38 harnesses soon, but you'll need to ask them for more details. Mick is pretty much AWOL and it sounds like that's not such a bad thing, but we aren't going to get into all that again.

Did anyone ever manage to get this fully installed and working for under $/€/£ 1000?

Not really. The adapter alone is about $450 and the rest of the harness tends to be around $250 or more. Then you have the actual NBT, monitor and idrive controller that can be another $500+. Cheapest I did was about $1300 or so for my second car with making my own harness. That was a couple years ago, but it hasn't changed much since.

Yea, the prices unfortunately haven't abated at all. Especially since its pretty much dated tech now that radio had effectively gone to the world wide Web.
If really like to be able to use my iPad in the car, unless there was a head unit that supported Internet radio. 🤷*♂️
Cheers

The metal inside the plastic collapsed. The four inner prongs look to be relatively intact, but my attempt to un-bend the outer part resulted in it just fracturing off. Are replacement plugs available at all? I guess it would still be mildly concerning since there are [delicate] electronics inside.
Anything I should do other than just request a refund, I'm an ebay novice.

You can find the plugs, but probably way more trouble than it is worth to replace. Requires complete disassembly of the NBT and desoldering the old one and soldering a new one.
Check www.car-part.com for a replacement after getting your refund. That is a network of salvage yards and I've seen the NBTs for around $300 or so there.

I am slowly making harnesses, yes. E39 and E38, same thing

Thanks. I'll hit Piping Rock up
but wait there's an adpater needed too? (I need to go back and review that installation guide.) I've attached a page from the installation guide. Are these the two wiring items I need?
Kool! I'll pm you for cost unless you want to post in here.

The adapter is the "brains" that converts between the old car and the new equipment. That's the carsystems, or bimmer retrofit piece.
Then there's the wiring harness to connect everything. Its not an off-the-shelf product, and requires you to know what cables/lengths/connectors need to go on it. So you can source all the parts yourself, cut, splice, etc... Or pay someone like TheShafro to do it for you. If you get a "plug and play" kit, they've made the harness for you already.
V35 carsystems firmware out for anyone interested I think it may be for my issue though of random shutdowns...

Can someone tell me if there is actual speaker outputs from the NBT. I see that there is speaker wires, but do they actually put out anything from the NBT. I have a question if the NBT has to be ran with some sort of factory amp to get sound. My car has been gutted of all factory equipment and I want the NBT to be used with my own amps. What factory components are required to use with the NBT?
http://www.bmw-planet.net/nbt/BMW_NBT_iBUS.pdf
Page 3 shows all the plugs. Page 15 has the wiring diagram for the NBT plug that appears to have four channels as pins 1-8.
Yes that’s correct - you can either run the 4 channels as amplified - drives directly speakers - not very powerful but does the job, or low line output (hifi) or hi line out (tophifi) or most which is fibre optic amp. All these need coding
