The pinout diagram is confusing though. Bmwplanetdude could you make a better one.

MJ, you probably have DSP, right? I know the adapter he's using is supposed to work with the DSP amp, but maybe BMWplanetdude can give some more insight on that since he's a distributor for the company that makes the adapter. I also got in touch with another distributor that might have the info if he doesn't. From what I understand, the other guy actually makes them.

Also, it's funny, I posted this same thread at the same time in the e38 section and didn't get a single reply, but the e39 section has had plenty.

PAUL!!! Why did I not know about this sooner

I was just revisiting the idea of doing a CarPC in the 7 last night, and now I find out about this.

I really need to get the car looking and driving decent and maybe I can start spending money on this project.

Like I said, I posted this in the e38 forum a while back and nobody replied. Don't know why you didn't know about it

I'm in the same boat as you, but I will probably be doing this in my 530i in the future. Too expensive to do it in both cars and the 5 gets driven much more.

Yeah, I had always thought about doing that as well, but then I found out about a Russian guy doing this in their e53 X5. That was with a CIC, then I found out that the adapters are made for the NBT system as well. That means 2014+ infotainment in our 14-20 year old cars. The best thing is all the addons like BT, internet, Sirius, DVD, PDC, etc are all self contained, meaning you don't even need a MOST bus.

    Sorry for crappy phone pics.

    @BMWPlanetdude

Would swapping the BMW 10.8 CID to 6.5 work? Resolution probably would suffer

I prefer to use the E39 frame to make it look OEM. Thoughts?

Tried to fit the NBT in there last night along with a F25 screen frame to see if I could stuff everything inside.
With little work it would actually fit.

Just confused by a few connections.

    The Kombi connector?
    Whats the RJ45 connector for?
The power and eject wires on the adapter?
    PDC out?

Kombi connector is to grab the car speed signal from cluster, so GPS can work.
RJ45 is network connection so you can use BMW E-SYS to connect to the NBT and code options, such as changing the animated boot logo, enabling reverse camera etc.
Power and eject wires I believe are if you want to connect the actual NBT fascia with the buttons so you can use the eject buttons of the CD drive etc.
PDC out is power to reverse camera I believe.

Hmm, with that barely fitting in the e39 dash, I think there's no way it'd fit in the e46 dash. Is a trunk install like discussed earlier feasible?

Is this the connector for the monitor from the NBT headunit?

Hsd cable. $2.50 per meter. I couldn't find the connector ends tho.

    WOAH WOAH WOAH WHAT?
i flat out assumed this was impossible, that the can systems would simply not talk to eachother even with some kind of converter in place.

i mean, holy crap! someone needs to work on a DIY guide, as well as making a plastic dash-mounted bezel to hold the screen (im really not a fan of screens mounted into the center stack, too far down). 3d printing may be the way to go here, and possibly paint it matte.

and not to forget, a cutting guide to mount the CIC controller, which might be awkward since the hazard switch and door locks and ash tray are sitting right where this thing should be

I already linked to a 4.5 meter USB cable (HSD type) that can be used in place of the monitor cable to mount the unit in the trunk. You just need to shave off the key tabs and rotate it as needed. Then you need to find a 2 pin connector to fit the power plug and run those alongside the HSD from the head unit to the dash. BMWPlanetdude is working with an e39 that didn't have NAV, so his 40 pin plug is in the dash already and would have required extending or rewiring the 40pin to the trunk to mount it that way, so he opted for mounting it in-dash. For people using e38's, e53's, e46's and e39's with NAV, it would be easier to install the unit in the trunk. I think there is a genuine BMW nav retrofit harness you can get that does this, but I'm sure it's more expensive than it needs to be. Really, the only wire from the dash that you need is the illumination wire, and it could probably be found elsewhere. The rest go to the Amp and so you could splice the connector to the wires there if you want.

I'm thinking yes since I saw some guy on the Russian forum put one in his e53. He made a really nice bezel for it. He also put the e70 shifter, key slot and key, and cluster in his.

Nice. I ran CentraFuse on my last carPC, but I put a Lilliput touch screen in the dash.

I still have most of the parts, now I just use it to play pandora in my shop.

I'm really excited about this project. It seems like this can be done for not that much more than an mk4 nav retrofit in a car that doesn't have factory nav.

    For my e38, I can't wait.

I was thinking for the dash bezel I could put a steel plate on each side of the dash opening, add some locating pins and some neodymium magnets on the bezel/monitor assembly. Then basically the monitor would just snap to the dash.

Putting the ultra wide screen monitor in the factory e38 nav bezel seems relatively easy. On my last build I basically used wood and epoxy to mount the touch screen bezel into the factory dash bezel and then bondo, sand, and matte black paint.

Keep in mind, this system is still pretty expensive (the reason I haven't undertaken it yet). The Ibus to NBT adapter is around $350-400, plus the NBT system itself can be around $700+, and then add in the cables which can be another couple hundred. It starts adding up quickly. Then, you still have basic e38, e39, e53, E46 speakers and amps. Not trying to detract people away from this, just keep in mind what it might cost. That being said, putting the new system in and doing all the maintenance on your car might make you feel like you bought a new car, so see what it's worth to you.
