I just want to watch this. I may do this down the road, sell all my other parts MKIV, Sirius, Bluetooth etc to balance the costs.

That's what I'm trying to do. I just sold a few things that should get me halfway there.
My old stuff should make up pretty close to the rest. Thankfully I have doubles of almost everything, so I can sell the extras before buying this, that way there's no downtime with my car.

My idea on mounting the I-drive controller.

Alpine style - suspended metal bracket.

No cutting on that precious trim!

Radio frame for nbt unit for easier mounting in the trunk. Can get them out of the e60 5 series for $30-$40 off ebay.

You could also probably use the frame from the e53 X5. It is already double din.

A suspended bracket for the idrive controller might work too. I remember the Alpine Vehicle Hub, was gonna throw that in my old 740 but ended up going with the Kenwood Carportal system.

I'm not sure why these guys are charging so much for it, but here is what it looks like:

I think it could work if you cut off the lower amp bracket.

Does anyone have an idea how much this would cost including all of the newer nav/screen components? Very interesting

Alpine Vehicle Hub Pro, came out in 2008 I think, its outdated now. Alpine never upgraded it or came out with newer models.

Above my pay grade boss. I'm trying to educate myself on this now. I came across an e90 post where they are trying to get idrive to work with car-pc

I've used a CAN-BUS Adapter to successfully process messages from an iDrive knob and screen, via a CarPC. Works great. That's how I use it right now, albeit with an IBUS interface. The carPC tells the CIS-IBUS unit to pull the RTS high, when the radio is on the "CD" input, bringing the carPC video onto the stock screen.

Good stuff so Im assuming like what blacknight said that the can could be programmed to communicate with space navigator mouse. To many variables in my mind. Like how would the usb of the mouse connect to the nbt. And if the mouse is capable of sending those commands.

Probably just better to find a good location for the idrive controller

The space navigator plugs into the arduino, which then translates the commands and sends them to the nbt.

So, domestic shipping with $460 price is that better than the overseas options?

I guess maybe if you want to source everything else yourself. PlanetBMWdude ,from what I gather, is providing all the hardware, plugs, and extended cables to go from trunk to dash.
I looked at the ebay prices for the NBT's but you will have source all the plugs and cables.

Yeah, that's what I found out as well. I wonder if the bimmer retrofit place is also selling the video cable. That's the one cable that isn't easy to make or source.

Even if you buy the screen, brain, and controller from ebay you still have to find a car to cut the plugs from or buy all that crap from the dealership.

Bimmer retrofit has a plug and play harness with their adapter.

The screen needs to be integrated better. It really does.
