oil filter cap removal need good tool

1997 z3 1.9 I bought the car in august with 58 K the oil was last changed at 52k. I was not able to remove so I took the car in to a friend that owns a oil change place. He had to use a metal tool/ cap with a large ratchet to get things loose. Now December I have put 2k on the car and want to put synthetic oil back in and I am unable to get it loose again. I bought a plastic version of what my friend has and I rounded the place where I put the socket. Is this a typical thing with these cars? Do any of you know where to get the metal tool? I think i read some where that there is a replacement cap that allows you to put a soket on top the cap to remove. Anyone got a link to the right one? Thanks

I got a metal cap remover from Bavarian Auto. It has held up very well. This is probably better advice for your friend, but remember that you don't need to kill the oil filter housing; it just needs to be snug.

Lots of them on Amazon, ebay, etc.
For your 4-cylinder, search for a 74/76 mm 14-flute "B" size BMW oil filter socket. For the 6-cylinder, 36mm hex socket is used.
It sounds like your friend forgot to lubricate the seal with oil before installing and/or over-tightened the cap.

Some have posted before that this one works. I can't personally vouch for it though:

I watched them tighten the cap and I even loosened it by hand so it was not over tightened. I want a metal one and want to con firm it is the same size as my Porsche
it is also tougo to get at. I will confirm in the norning then search for a metal one.

A 3" extension in the socket wrench makes it easy. Don't need an extension if the restrictive intake duct is removed for good.

Ya cleaner than mine. Would love a process that removes weight and restriction.

Built 10/96, with 40,000 miles on it now.

And plug the resonator hole, which is above the air filter, with an expanding rubber plumbing fitting:

Update I picked a 75 1/2 mm it was said to be for a Ford or mazda. I had to use a breaker bar but it make loose. The nice thing is it also works for my Porsche.

I got one for my Z4 today from FCP Euro. I think your size can be found locally but my size (86mm) I had to order online for around $8. I ordered some other stuff as well. I like FCP Euro.
