That's some nice cupholder and ODBII alignment you got there! Indeed the little things. Of course I' wondering if that cupholder really works

Impressive eh? A little double sided tape behind the OBD cover until I get the new plastic thing did the trick. Actually I would have used some velcro but couldn't find any laying around. The velcro used to hold an EZ Pass would be perfect.

Also noticed no ticking at all this morning when I started driving. Once it warmed up, the ticking was back.

I also went with velcro on the ODB cover, at least nobody will break it.

I am an idiot for even posting this, but, the engine seems to be getting quieter. Tapping seems to be receding. Driving home tonight it was very quiet. I had resigned myself to either getting rid of the car (gets wife’s vote lol) or finding a good used engine. Will keep on driving it for now. According to this from bavauto it should keep improving.

So as per usual, any mention of something going well results in something not going well. The ticking is no longer gone, it's back full time and pretty loud. I am also getting a P1345 code at high RPM and I wonder if it is related. I swapped spark plugs and coils with cylinder 3, but code remains on cylinder 2. There was a smidgen of oil at the bottom of the spark plug well, so initially I thought that might be the issue, but the code remains.

Would it be possible a stuck valve or collapsed lifter could result in a cylinder misfire?

In the meantime I am driving this almost every day.

Yeah, Thanks guys as I will be performing this task shortly. Could you refresh me on the easiest way to access the water pump w/o removing any unnecessary items?

Jerry I think you need to drain the coolant, remove hoses, remove the air box and pipe, belts, etc. You can probably work around the vibration damper, but might be just as easy to take it off. Biggest issue I had dealing with the water pump is that the coolant lines that run under the intake always seem to fall out and are kind of a pain, so I lifted the intake to access them.

Car was running really rough when cold, CEL coming on a lot. Then it developed a solid, consistent miss and had codes for cylinder 3 misfire and multiple cylinder misfire. Swapped CPS from side to side, no difference. Pulled #3 coil and plug, did a quick compression check and it seemed good. Cleaned up the plug, it didn't look bad at all, put back together and same codes.

At this point, pulled all plugs. Most of them were super oily and one (#7 I think) had some carbon build up on the ground electrode. I had used some single electrode NGK BKR6EIX/6418 plugs when I changed them about 40k miles ago. Figured I'd swap them out for newl NGK BR6EQP/3199 plugs with four electrodes. While I'm at it, do a compression check. Results:
    All done while dry
    1- 160
    2- 155
    3- 155
    4- 165
    5- 160
    6- 140
    7- 140
    8- 165
Squirted some oil into #6 and 7, and both came up to a little better than 150.

I need to pull the VC to check the lifters and change the gaskets anyway, so will see if I can put some top engine cleaner in those cylinders to soak and loosen up any carbon build up on the rings. Both of those cylinders look to have more carbon on top of the piston than the others. In the meantime, car runs fantastic now, Fairly smooth idle, no more gassy smell at start up, CELs seem to be at bay. Should have changed the plugs miles ago. Pretty sure I was told to somewhere earlier in this thread...

How long would you normally expect VC gaskets to last?

Get genuine BMW ones as they tend to fit better and las longer...

Yeah pretty sure what is in there is Elring or Reinz or one of those. Duly noted.

Big price swing on those gaskets!

Mine are elring now and seaping a little on the passenger side. They were done with the guides around 30k ago probably...

Did you use any silicone rtv on the gaskets or just put them in dry? I installed mine dry. Lately I've been lubing them a bit with silicone grease. I've heard some people recommend a coat of rtv on them.

So looking to do a heart transplant.

New heart. 147k miles, needs guides and associated sundries.

Jesus bolt easy when engine is out of the car.

Got it on the engine stand with the hoist as secondary support. I like belt and suspenders.

Pretty clean inside. Supposedly well maintained.

Been cleaning grease off of it, and removed old guides last night. Will do vanos rebuild and replace the guides this weekend. Should have done a leakdown test before I got into this but I did not, so will plan on doing one before I totally reassemble it. Toyed with the idea of removing the heads and sending them out, but that's a little beyond the scope of acceptability I am already exceeding.

More than a little tick. Sounds like it’ll blow up any day. Sick of it.

Vanos before rebuild. All done now. Simple task but can be frustrating trying to squeeze the teflon ring in there, and the pressing while reefing on a 2' breaker bar is somewhat stressful. At least for me anyway.

All this crap back on the engine.

Sharp eyes will notice I put the 1-4 exhaust sprocket on backwards. Noticed this after the pix and not sure it really matters but I flipped it over to tighten and turn a couple cranks per GAS instructions. Still getting a tiny bit of slack in that bank after turning 720, so am going to hit it one more time tonight. Got to be late so it was time for a beverage and clean up.

I didn't replace the vanos distribution gaskets or sealing rings. Not sure if others have also skipped this part? I will replace the check valves though.

Nice job Ed you are rocking it out pretty fast. I did replace the distribution housing gaskets and the sealing rings as well when I did mine But I had to install new distribution housings because I have the older version without the Teflon

Thanks Ayal, I am trying to be tedious and careful every step of the way. Done it once but still basically a noob and still screw things up but being very careful and backtracking where needed.

Hah, I looked through your thread and found out you replaced those. Yours were super scored. Hopefully mine are good since the engine is out of an '01.

Thanks Ruskii. Things will be slowing down a bit sadly. But managed to get the timing done. Thanks to Sean (ladiesman) for the use of his G.A.S. timing tools.

Replaced these O-rings for the oil supply lines behind the engine mount bracket.

    Timing covers back on.

    Time to paint valve covers.
