For anyone who cares I added the most current list of parts and expenditures to date to the bottom of the first post. Getting up there.

Well I thought I had quite a list. You're the winner. The good news is that u should have very little problems for awhile. Since my list of repairs I have gone for 30k+ miles with only a cam sensor replacement. 15 minute job. Once the large items are done, u get simple stuff like sensors that will go out, or maybe the expansion tank, etc. All easy fixes. It is worth the trouble. Still love the car.
Yeah I think I might be setting a record on spending just to get the thing back to stock and good condition. Thing is I still have things I want to do to it, and still some things I really have to do. I keep driving it in the meantime - 200 miles yesterday, so getting up to about 202,000 miles. Going to need to get at least 250k out of it.
ahh the love for the 7....I don't want to see what I spent on mine... I kept every receipt since 2006 when I bought mine...

Looks great! Where did you get the bulbs from?
Nice. I need to do mine too.

Got got them on Amazon. They were $90 or so including shipping for the pair. One of the old ones had trouble lighting when it was cold. Hoping the new bulbs will fix that too.
Easy cheap DIY! Already had the bulbs so I was looking to do something on the car without spending money.

Posting an update on the car. Just about 208,500 miles on it now, and climbing every day. Average fuel mileage is 20.2 mpg in all around driving according to the OBC, a little less according to my refill calculations. I will just pretend it's 20.2 mmmkay?
Been having some niggling issues:
- DSC light is on, DSC inoperative. Need to get INPA loaded to try to fix, but haven't gotten around to it this summer. Definitely need to figure this out before winter.
- Sporadic Trans Failsafe Prog message. Battery is new. When this message pops up, car drives and shifts normally. Not sure what is up with that.
- P0135 occasionally. I have a new O2 sensor to install.
- P1345, P0492 codes occasionally. Mostly when I get on it. I have a rattle when gassing it. I think I have a bad cat or cats. Ok if driven mildly.
- Engine has cold start up rattle, very loud at times, but goes away after a minute. Must be vanos rattle but those were rebuilt. Maybe need the check valves.
- Engine is noisy at idle. Knocks pretty loudly from the bottom end. I think the bearings are loose.
Guy on Facebook is selling an engine for $400. Maybe I should buy that, or maybe I should just go buy a nice 740. But whatever, I will just keep driving it because in my experience the least expensive car to own is the one you already have. And I love this car.
Here it is with an appropriate backdrop lol.
Could use some spacers.
Can people see the pic?

Fixed!
Cut it off with fishing line. Had to cut the wire that runs down the driver’s side of the rear glass and into the trunk. Used the wife’s blow dryer to heat up the remaining adhesive to peel it off. Then finished with lacquer thinner and buffed it with my Harbor Freight DA buffer. Looks much cleaner!

Looks way better without it! I wish I could get rid of my 540it's antenna that easily, but there's an actual hole in the roof for the wiring, ugh. Maybe if I ever repainted the car I'd get rid of the antenna and the sunroof in one go.

It’s super easy! Wish I had broken it years ago.
Thanks man! I’ve put a ton of work into the car. Felt good to clean it up today after it has been dirty so long. It’s getting a little rough around the edges.
Much better! Glad there was no hole. Hole in the roof not a good idea! Our E30 vert has a goofy third brakelight I’d love to ditch but it too has a hole under it. Not sure if a coupe trunk will fit a vert but if we get it painted it’s going away!
No doubt and it's paying off MAJORLY!

Time for some real soul searching on the old girl. Engine has started making a real loud tapping noise under load. Was doing it when cold a while ago and was thinking it was an exhaust leak. Now doing it all the time. Sounds like lifter noise.
Plus winter has taken its toll on the body this year with rust, and now the windshield has a crack. I think the cats are bad and the DSC light is still on. Inspection at the end of the month not looking promising. Maybe time to find something new.
check to see if one of your spark plugs are loose.
Transfer all the good parts from this 740i to the 740il you bought with the cool interior? You said that one runs nicely and is in good shape, that could be like a fresh start for you.

Hah yeah that was the first thing I checked when the noise started. Seems to be inside the engine. Maybe I’ll check again though. Today I listened to the engine using a hose as a stethescope and my son holding the brakes while revving in park to produce the sound and couldn’t pinpoint it.

That is certainly something I’m thinking about. Sure like the black shorty sport though.
Did you try banging on the cats?
Most likely a clogged cat. Could also be a bad coil.
