E83 x3 auto transmission fluids how many QTs

I am going to change auto transmission fluid on my 2004 X3 3.0i. I am wondering how many quarts fluids I need? I searched many threads, but I did not see any clearly saying how many quarts are needed. I guess 5?
Also, I found the fluid has to be Dexron VI, so is this fluid OK? Thanks a lot.

Valvoline Dex VI is what I chose for mine. It took just under 5.5ish quarts per change. Changed the sump oil twice, dropped the pan, and filled up. Bought 20 bottles and returned 3.

So it takes only 5.5 quarts per change? So your 17 quarts is for 3 changes? I am sorry I am trying understand you precisely.

Yeah... I remember it not needing quite 6 quarts per change. The reason I did three is because that's the only way to do a full fluid change without a machine. You end up with about 90% new fluid.
