I have used both (launching, flatshifting 450+whp many times) with nothing bad to report.

I made a bit of progress this weekend. I have the turbo intake pipe done and the charge pipe/turbo mocked up and ready for the welder. I am slowly working on making my down pipe and waste gate mocked up. I bought the manifold, down pipe, and waste gate pipe used and unfortunately the waste gate to down pipe connection wasn't included.

Just a bit more progress, should have this stuff welded this weekend. I'm going to tack it wit my mig and drop it off to a friend to tig it all together.

I broke down and ordered the mishimoto radiator and all the goodies to plumb oil and coolant to my turbo.

I do have a couple questions that I can't find a definitive answer to.
-What are people using for engine oil on their turbo's e36's
-I've read that the DME can be picky about the O2 signal, has anyone had success feeding the narrowband output on a wideband O2 to the DME to avoid having two sensors? Perhaps this is more tune specific and I should ask Jordan?

You can feed the wideband to a narrowband through a chip or something. Not the other way.

So, it's been quite a while since I've touched this project, other stuff has taken priority, but I'm just about ready to get cracking again. I've got my down pipe and turbo pipe welded up, got all my turbo cooling and oil plumbing stuff, just received my boost controller/wideband in the mail. I'm not going to make any guesses on when I'll have my first start, but I've got all the parts, just need to put in the time...

Following right behind you! I'm starting my very similar build in May when I get home. Great work so far, keep it up!

    I need someone to copy after all(;

I'm curious what you will think of that boost controller/wideband- trying to decide on that at the moment..

I'm surprised nobody else here is using it. A closed loop TPS driven boost controller that can be programmed based on vehicle speed, RPM, and/or AFR and control WMI seems like a no-brainer to me.

It's been way too long since I did more than simply glance at the pile of parts that use to be a car in the garage. I'm trying to find some motivation to get this car back on track. I spent a few hours yesterday mounting the turbo, plumbing the coolant and oil lines, welding the charge pipe, and welding a 90° to the throttle body. Next step is to install the engine so I can finish the exhaust and IC plumbing fab work. I still need a fuel pump, turbo side mount bushing, and a couple miscellaneous parts. Never thought I'd let this project drag on for so long...

Small update, I picked up my welded throttle body, the last of my wastegate pipe, and the charge pipe which ends just below my AC compressor. These were the parts I've been waiting on before I reinstall the engine. Next step is install clutch, transmission, and slide the engine back into place. Then I expect several more hours of cutting and fitting exhaust components, IC plumbing, wiring, etc.

This is the worlds slowest turbo project, but at least it's still moving forward.

    Here's my TB:

Ive seen a lot of throttle bodies with the welded 90 any reason why? Im guessing its for reliability.

When "certain" boost pressures hit that 90* coupler

it can easily FLICK it off there
    even with great clamps.

Some who plan to GO BIG make sure that area will never fail under boost.

My silicon TB to elbow connector has come loose once in 5 years, but I do not run more than about 22 psi with a spike to 23 or 24. This may be a big boost thing.

I've learned over the years that I only like to do things once. I already had the elbow included with an intercooler kit I bought and decided the fewer points of failure the better. The way the kit came, it had two silicone boots and that elbow, that is four points of failure compared to two. I know the silicone elbow is an option many use and still only has two points of failure, but it's an extra $100. I think I may also thread a meth nozzle into this elbow.

I did it mostly because I could. It's also really nice to drill and tap the cast aluminum for things like the IAC instead of having to buy an expensive silicon coupler with it molded in.

    Draw backs:

    1. It kind of sucks to remove the lower left bolt. Slightly less bad for the upper left

    2. Removing the manifold to gain access to anything under it but not completely remove it is no longer possible because the elbow hits and scratches the strut tower.

So here is my most recent slow, but steady progress. Almost ready to mate the transmission and drop them back in.

Biannual update on the slowest moving e36 turbo project of all time:

I was able to install my F1/FX stage 3 clutch and flywheel. I replaced the pilot and TOB with some decent quality German items in the process. I read at least a dozen times which way the F1 disc is installed (long side toward flywheel). Bolted on the trans only to realize I only have have the shift rebuild kit and that my shift selector seal appears to be leaking.

I installed the new shift lever bearing cup and delrin oval bushings, but ordered a new boot, selector joint, selector seal, and UUC double sheer selector rod. I'm not concerned with shortening the shifts, just tightening up the shift feel.

Those delrin oval bushings will really tighten up the shifter. And that DSSR will have a huge impact.

I found a bit more motivation today and was able to get the engine and trans back in the car:

Looks damn good bro and glad you found the motivation to continue making progress! My M5 clutch has been slipping like crazy and I planned to go to the FX stage 3 clutch/flywheel as well. I'm glad you clarified which way the flywheel is supposed to go since its always been a problem...
