Substance D's hobo/budget/turbo/daily drifter build (3yrs of pics)

Hello. I'm Ryan. This is my car, I bought it from a friend who bought it to daily, not realizing what bad repair it was in, and quickly blew the headgasket.

At first I was thinking just stock replacement, but then went a little cray cray...

    We ended up with

    Cometic .120
    New rings
    New bearings
    Rebuilt head
    Replaced front subframe

After I got it back I drove it for a bit, but it was not without issues...it kept breaking diff bolts, 3 upgrade ones to be exact, so time to rebuild the rear end....

    ForumRunner_20140915_225027.png

    Akg diff and subframe bushings
    Maxpsi diff brace
    welded 3.15
    New axles
    New Uca's
    Rebuilt camber arms

Then the shifter fell apart, stupid Bitch clip...

That was fun and all....but way too much work for 5psi...so got some 42lb injectors and called my tuner, and we turned it up to 13psi...

    Now that's better.

Fabian at JP Engineering hooked me up with one of his diffusers.

Found some RD RGP in the junkyard and powder coated them.

Looks nice! What coolant overflow bottle are you using and would you recommend it? I am planning to do something similar for that.

Its a universal one I found used on ebay super cheap. Has an AN port on the bottom and Npt on the side. It works good, the location isnt great, sits too low, cant be higher because hood is in the way, so bleeding it sucks, but once your bled, works fine for me!

It doesn't self bleed? I'm wanting a self bleeding setup that works like an e30 with a trickle of coolant (and any air bubbles) always going through the small line from the top of the radiator. It seems stupid to me that BMW went from a self bleeding system to a manual bleed on the e36, e46 etc. There must be some reason but I don't know what.

As I understand it, coolant is always moving through that small line off the radiator. But on these cars air can get trapped because the heater core is so high, and you have to force fluid through it. There are several videos on YouTube.

Well its time for another 3 YEAR UPDATE!
    2015

My goal was to make it out to TOPDRIFT Limited, a competition with emphasis on street cars, since I daily drive this thing, I though it would be a perfect fit.

Added angle to the car. Made my own Roll center knuckles and e46 early control arms. This setup worked okay, had lots of room for improvement, more on that later. Basically spent all my time trying to prep the car for upcoming track days. Got a partial sponsorship on Action Clutch 1ms. Great clutch holds all the power, and daily driveable if your a man. Also installed a inline hydro, stock ebrake was useless for me.

After much wrenching, I finally made it to the dyno.

Made 350whp 350tq at 13psi. Was lots of fun, and proved to me my butt dyno was dialed.

I wasn't able to make it to topdrift mostly because of financial reasons and work obligations. So that was a bummer.

    2016

Goal was to make topdrift if possible but definitely get out on track, so I did just that.

Drove my car 2hrs to Willow Springs, drifted all day and drove home. Was AWESOME to be at balconey again after it being like 10 YEARS since the last time I was there. I pussifooted a bit, relearning how to drive, and I HAD to drive home, but couldn't help but rip it.

    IMAG0071.jpg

After the track day, the car survived. But I found some flaws with my setup. At angle my wheel would rub pretty bad, e46 arms werent enough with my wheeltire combo. Also I blew a couple of Getrags and MANY MANY Guibos street driving lol.

    IMAG0066.jpg
    IMAG0049.jpg

So I spent the rest of the year fixing broken stuff and trying to get her competion ready. But yet again, couldn't make topdrift.

    Now the fun stuff

    2017!

Goal was to do topdrift (lol) but make any drift event I possibly could.

Decided to up the boost a smidge....I was pretty used to that power level and I knew she had more in it.

Then I found out about a drift event at Camarillo Airport which is very close to me and has some history to me. I scrambled to get prepped for that.

    IMAG0140.jpg

    IMAG0142.jpg

This event was EPIC....Drove all damn day, roasted many many tires, had the most fun no doubt. I also tandemed on a track for the first time, gave a bunch of ride alongs, and was finally able to drive my car at 100%.

After that event we've moved shops so did some donuts to break it in.

Then one day I was driving into work...car was running funny....like an idiot, I laid into boost, and POP...tons of smoke, and I knew the motor was toast....after diagnosing the problem...A faulty dme coolant sensor caused my afrs to go wonky, and I fried 2 ringlands....

So paid a visit to @castromotorsport to pick up a used m52...spent the next few days disassembling both motors and then assembling one out of the best parts. Then reinstalled that motor in the car for a total of 5 days

    _DSC5189.jpg

So now Im running Megasquirt, M50tu Head, M52 bottom end, same turbo, 10:1 and E85....this thing rips haaaaaaaaaaaarddddd

Theres another circuit spirit at camarillo airport in 1 WEEK, and I am currently scrambling to make that.... and that will probably conclude my 2017 season.

Nope! That would blow my hobo budget out of the water, ms2/extra. Loving it so far, compared to stock dme flashes

7 days till Circuit spirit 2, I'm very nervous about beating on this new engine, but that's what their for right?

I did a bunch of MS installs, it's not too bad when you know what you're doing. Only down side is the MS2 is still batch fire IIRC. So you've lost a little resolution from the stock DME that did individual injectors and single coil control.

Its a ton of fun man. The layout is a bit small, but its a cool spot, good weather, chill vibes, and close to home. One of the first events I ever drove at was Dai Inada's Drift Academy like a decade ago, so its a fun trip down memory lane. At the last one, I was working grid, and Red Baron e30 s54 was there, when he would leave the line, I would get SHOWERED with unburnt fuel, it was awesome haha. Im stoked on your build dude, cant wait to see what ya can do with some powa. Hopefully we can drive together at some point!

Defiantly gave up some efficiency running batch. But to trade that for MAP based fuel and timing, data acquisition, flex fuel, e-boost, launch control etc...totally worth it imo.

Well Circuit Spirit was last sunday. Had an awesome time! Car ran beautifully, and is making alot more torque than before, I could barely spin 235's in 3rd last time, this time 235's were like driving on ICE. Tried some bigger tires, and the car felt much better. The front end is still not performing as I want, its much better than before, but I think I am going to do a 3rd revision. It makes alot more angle, but with the new motor, I am finding myself at my new MAX angle alot. We also designed and built this hood vent in house, and this was the first real test of it, beside street and highway testing. It worked really well, it was 95* degrees out, and at max heat soak waiting in line, I was seeing 193 CLT 130 IAT, as soon as i would start driving it would drop to 189 CLT 115IAT, my max recorded temp all day was 199*. Really happy with that. I have some pics and some EAR-GASMIC vids I'll be posting up, keep an eye out.
