Hi, new to the forums.
I have a Bmw 1985 325e that has sat in the elements for the better part of 8 years. I have done quite a bit of service to the car and have it running quite well but have encountered a few problems. I have searched the boards for reading fault codes for the 85 (check engine light is blinking) and found out a little. Apparently the stomp test does not work on the 85 325e and all the code readers I have found (including pelican and peake) are labled 87-02. I have the oil serivce tool to hook under the hood but need to find a compatible fault code reader, any help would be appreciated.
On your 85, the blinking check engine light is related to the check panel above the rear view mirror. This has nothing to do with engine diagnostics. When you start the car, hit the brakes and assuming everything is working right, it should go out. You can also cancel the flashing but pushing the button on the check panel.
These cars are pre OBD,and only have rudimentary diagnostics. There is a plug under the hood for a scan tool that did exist.

^ Correct! The 325e cars didn't come with a check engine light. 8)
Funny story - some idiot at the smog check place failed my E30 recently because of the check light. I had his boss come out to the car. Told him to get into the car, turn the key to the first position and observe the CHECK light. Told him to look up above the mirror. What does he see? OK, press the brakes. NOW what does he see? Lights all go out. Long silence... "OK, he says, I guess the kid is a little new at this." No kidding.
Thanks so much for this...now I can take the electricians tape off my check engine light (altho that works, too! )
Hey I have the same year 325e and I have a problem when taking off and it’s start to shutter and jerk back and forth around 10 mph and will continue to do it till around 25 mph, if I mash on the pedal while the car is doin it, it’ll bog out sometimes or it’s actually respond correctly still around 40 then Otto do it again. Any ideas?

... forty-three years of driving before I get behind the wheel of a BMW .... and I am thinking, "why did it take me so long?"
... and then after another 4 years I can't believe that I have two of them !!
