    Programming Airbag Module

My body shop caused my '94 840ci airbag module to fail during a repair. They have taken it to the local BMW dealer which obtained a new module but "do not know how to program it" because their computer technology does not cover older BMW's. They have requested tech support from BMW for instructions but they "have not been any help" Essentially they don't know what to do. The body shop is reputable and are covering the expense but its been two weeks and no progress. Any suggestions?

I'm sure Revtor will know what needs to be done - but - I would think a much simpler solution would be to get a second-hand unit from another 840ci. They are not coded to the rest of the electronics, just set up for the number of airbags and other features.

If dealer can't figure it out. Find an indy shop who has experience with tools like NCSExpert and ask them to code your module.
It is also possible to send it to someone with proper tools to code it.

Recoding the airbag module is quite straightforward using BMW DIS (up to v44) or SSS:

    [1] ZCS/FA CODING > [1] E31 Series > [1] Recoding > [19] Airbag, and follow the instructions on the screen.

But these instructions are of course rather pointless if they do no longer have the tools to code these older vehicles...

Are they coding via BMW TIS online? If so then they should have the round adapter and process through ISTA/P. If not then they are using probably AUTEL or something similar and are contacting BMW technical help and not the actual dealership. Unless they are using BMW ISTA/P ISTA/D then BMW technical help will be useless to them.

The body shop should just ship it to the dealer since they are covering the cost and have it coded/programmed there. I have coded/programmed this module on the E31 through ISTA/P before, all the files are there.

    Mark.
