Good day at the pull a parts.

Made my rounds to the 3 yards in Memphis. LKQ just today got a 01 740il, Nav display was gone, but got the DVD nav out of the trunk, still had the tool kit and first aid kit. Had perfect headlight lens, so i took those, seat controler, master window switch and the gas discharge bulbs and some other things. total 55.00 Then pull a part had a 00 740 and a 95 740il. 1 set of rear window shades, 2 glove box latches, assorted pieces of verona wood and in the trunk of the 00 was nav disk for my region still in there BMW packaging, another first aid kit and some other things. total, 10.00 Then at Pick a part, they just got in a 98 740il. Picked up some perfect fog lights and some other items for total 20.00. If it was not so hot would have pulled some more, but by then i was suffering heat stroke and had to head home.

Out here in Sacramento LKQ won't let you near the yard for "liability" reasons.
"Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, alright. We got 3:15 open differential with an M5 sway-bar outback, a 4.4 liter V-8 with Bosch sequential fuel injection, four cams, 32 valves, VANOS units using Beisan Systems seals, 10 to 1 pistons, a conservative 282 macht schnell horsepower, all planted to the earth with AC Schnitzer Type II Racing Wheels and Michelin PS2s at all four corners, an M5 rear sway-bar outback, and a Strong-Strut tower brace up front. We're talkin' some Deutschland muscle."

Niceee. Sounds like my kind of day. Deals so good, it makes the $1.75 Gatorade's worth it.

Nice finds! I didn't start getting into junk yards until early this year when I scored both valve covers for $25 I think... (since one of mine was cracked on the edge). 2 weeks ago I scored on the following: 2 rear seat belts (since one of mine was really loose and adjusting didn't work) rear center vent (since one of my slats were broken), both C-pillar lights, C-pillar covers, wolf whistle horn, big handful of fuses & relays, and nearly perfect working rear cup holder to fix my completely broken one. All for a whopping $45

I NEED a drivers side fog light and this will be my goal. I did ask for grins how much an entire engine costs and he said $207. Looks like I'll be hunting for a 99-01 Vanos just for the hell of it.

My father was a junk yard dog. I spent every Saturday morning scrounging yards with my father from the time I was probably six or seven. I thought that's where parts for cars came from.

Any time I see an E38 in the yard, it looks like this. How do you guys get so lucky?

Nice! I really miss the salvage yards in Memphis. Used to go a couple times a week when I lived there. Yards here in the Norfolk area are decent but nothing special.

What kind of shape does the foglight need to be in? I pulled one off of the green car pictured above (see the pencil sticking out of the hole to pop it out? I forgot my tools and had to scrounge through other cars to find that pencil to get the light out). I haven't plugged it in to see if it works, but I will. It had a thick clear protector on it which I pulled off since it was pitted. The glass itself is clear, but the very very edges are a bit pitted (where the clear protector didn't reach).

PM me your address and it's yours (as soon as I can get home to ship it). I have two other complete sets from other junked cards, and just this one random driver's side one from that car.

I, too, live in the memphis area (C'ville). Glad to hear they have some new blood in town. Would love to know more about what is left. I have a few items I would like to find for my 2001 e38. Drop me a note...

Wow... I need to start calling the yards.

I always got the feeling that the yards around here would think BMW stuff was worth its weight in gold, so I never even bothered to ask.

congrats man. I just love the salvage/junk yards here in Illinois. I've scored a lot of parts. Waiting for it to cool down a bit and will be back visiting all my local yards.

Most pull a part yards have a set price, does not matter what kind of car. I just stripped a bunch of parts off a Porsche 944 and those are worth a lot of money.

    Just 1 E38, for now
Just luck of the draw really. I have been lucky and other times wish I never went

My typical pull a part experience in the metro Detroit area is calling the yard to have them tell me they do not know what is on the lot, the inventory changes so fast etc. Which sucks because the ones in Seattle could at least tell me how many E38's or 300zx z31's they had sitting there. So I show up and then walk half a mile to the back of the lot with my tools because the import section is in the back and then I look around and find a stripped 5 series Bimmer and that is it.

The few that I go to here have an online inventory that's updated every night, so atleast you know what cars they have on the lot before you go. Obviously it would be a nightmare to inventory what parts are available for each car, so really luck of the draw once you get there and see what hasn't been pulled already.

Out here, you can go online to see when a new car hits the lot. The sites fine you the year make and model. This is how I hunt my prey.

    What sites are you using?

I think only 1 of the 3 yards near me aren't little privately owned things.

LKQ, and pull a part are listed on line. If you can get the name of even the private yards they usually list them on line.

Well over the weekend I was able to hit 2 local junk yards and it was like grocery shopping. I pick up 2 sets of rear side window shades, a complete set of window regulators, kidney grill from a 750, porn lights from a 750, a MAF (to be used as a spare or tester), alternator, single stage M-Sport steering wheel and I got a never before used like new M-Par and complete set of tools from the trunk. Not a bad day and I paid a total of 50.00 bucks for everything totaled. The funny thing is these guys don't really know how to price the import stuff which is good for me. LOL.
