The 2 door E3 race car get's rolling road dyno'd the week starting August 27. I'll get a vid. Hopefully my S38B38 is completed shortly. I'll then need to get it in the car which will also take time. Followed by a rolling road dyno to fine tune. These two engines and cars were meant to be completed 2 years apart. Now they will be finished and billed roughly the same week. No winning sometimes.

Dyno tune tomorrow, Sept 05, 2018. It currently starts but without an ECU map won't run. Starting is good. It means it's blocking the dyno from another engine slipping in. I think we are finally at the bench dyno tune stage and the flywheel has been machined and installed and the starter motor now hooked up and working properly.

First startup complete but issues with coils. Well, we think it is the coils. Running on 4 cylinders and when we swap the coils, the 2 cylinders not firing, fire, and two of the cylinders that did fire, don't. So some tricky wiring work to do but mid way through the bench dyno so results just a few days away.

So much closer. Back on the dyno to try and fix coil issue today. E3 racer off to rolling road dyno tomorrow. Bank account asthmatic.

Engine still not firing on all 6 despite new coils. Complete leak down test yesterday and engine is fine. It is in the wiring and programming of the Megasquirt. Engine builder has given this information to the ECU tuner who is heading back to work things out. What a pain.

That said. E3 racer dyno'd and around 347hp at the flywheel. Held back by webers but apparently runs strong with no dips climbing in power to 6800rpm before starting to drop off. Perfect as cranks only good for 7200rpm. According to Pip Barker, a better power to weight ratio than the JPS Group A 6'ers. So now to upgrade suspension and brakes on that one after a few runs.

Would also be great to see the power curve to. Are the specs on it mentioned in this thread ?

    Digger,

The thread is in the E3/E9 section. All specs are there. Car back today so will organise a vid this week.

They are still going at it.

Last night Tony (engine builder), Elie and George (mechanics and S14 specialists) and Mark (ECU specialist and tuner) worked to 11pm. The engine has been checked twice as has the wiring. Brintech (https://www.brintechcustoms.com.au/) who originally spent 6 hours trying to tune it on Tony's bench dyno have also checked the wiring twice, post originally setting it up.

Last night they got the engine firing on all 6 cylinders. It ran rough. To have it run a little smoother they needed to really lean it out. When I say rough, back firing like a cannon.

    Mark was looking at the computer and tuning last night to see what is going on. He is simply not happy with the Megasquirt PRO III at the moment. He notes the engine should run on it but is simply not. Options are;

    1. Work out why the Megasquirt is not working and fix.
    2. Contact Megasquirt and see if we can not either get a good strong S38B38 tune file or, get them to go over the current tune to find issues.
    3. Get Megasquirt to send over files so we can check the Megasquirt is working properly.
    4. Replace the Megasquirt with Marks preferred tune-able ECU.

So we believe we have isolated the issue down to the Megasquirt PRO III. Now to work out what issue, programming, faults, faulty equipment.

More to come. I'd post a video but it would just be 4 grumpy middle age engine specialists looking exhausted.

When it comes to info on the web. I found these two threads that appear to be the same thread posted on two different boards. Any ideas would be helpful.

Why not just go with Emtron? They are local to you and for what you pay for you get much much more than 13k worth of Motec..Actually more!

The KV8 is what you want..

I'll leave it to the specialist tuner. He will review all data on his computer and go from there. He may recommend we toss the Megasquirt. He may find a tuning issue. At least we appear to be closer to a solution.

Just had a call from Tony.

Apparently the original wiring guy had just wired the cylinders up from 1 to 6 instead of in the firing order. Realising his mistake he then re-wired but, apparently only back to the ignition box. So coils around the wrong way. Mark has found 2 or 3 tuning issues on the current maps and data that would also cause poor running and problems.

So now further discussion prior to another run next week. They think they have the issues pretty much sorted so now a 4 to 6 hour tune to go through maps then build up to power. Sometime next week. Here's hoping.

Engine now working. We are going to swap computers. Will purchase a Haltech or similar and finish power runs with this. Mark is simply not happy with the megasquirt. Apparently it is a DYI system and the experts shy away.

Not a power run but at least it is running smooth and firing nicely on all 6.

Rama from RHD engineering had a haltech 2000 for sale for about $900 on Facebook. It’s s good move, way too much invested to go for diy style megasquirt. Some like them but abit risky. With the haltech or similar can do auto tune just dial in your a/f ratio vs load then program some timing and away u go. It may be worth considering running flex fuel as with e85 can get some crazy engine response.

    First things first, let's get it fully tuned and in the car. May 2014 she went to Melbourne. And I'm still fighting. Once she is tuned to 370hp - 400hp I can;

    1. put the new dash in.
    2. put the M6 300km/h and 8000rpm gauge cluster in.
    3. put in the multi gauges.
    4. put the new M-Tech steering wheel on.
    5. move battery to the boot. I already have the rear strut mount brace with battery tray.
    6. place the 6 speed in.
    7. repair two small rust holes. Were bubbles but since May 2014 these have been hit and damaged.
    8. finalise putting in front recaro's.
    9. re-upholster the interior. Have Alpina cloth ready to go.
    10. fan under the dash has gone (bearings) and needs refurbishment or replacement.
    11. needs aircon. I had to drive my Megane RS265 last summer with the compressor gone and it was hell. Aircon will be a must in the future.
    12. put the M635 CSi front spoiler on. It needs painting to match the car.
    13. Complete the front brake upgrade. Rears are already 540.

But first I want to drive it. Hard through some twisty bits. Long and fast either early or late once the sun has gone down. 370hp to 400hp will be plenty. It probably had 160hp under the old engine and it was still fun. Not fast, but fun.

So I guess Haltech it is. Awaiting price now.

    Okay,

Haltech selected. As engine is confirmed good and working well, will go back into car now and then off to Mark at his tuning shop for a rolling road tune. Unfortunately we just will not know the true flywheel hp. I'm happy with rolling road and a few white lies.

3 weeks to put engine back in then Haltech tune.
