Gaz,
Aiming for this Friday. The methodology is as follows;
1. Engine on bench dyno, wiring/Megasquirt experts to attend, complete 80% tune. So drive-able and safe. hopefully this Friday.
2. Check engine, valve clearances, etc.
3. Put engine in car and service. One to two weeks. Car needs new dash, new steering wheel and a few other upgrades including the completion of the sports seat install.
4. Take car to wiring/Megasquirt experts for final 20% tune on their rolling road.
5. Road test.
So probably a month in the process but hopefully starting this Friday.

Hopefully you are driving it soon. It should be a beast. I finally got my e34 running sweet after 3 years of stuffing around. I’ve even got rid of all the error codes. The wait is worth it, even tho it has been as u know a pretty messy process. To do car upgrades one character it teaches you is resilience.

Engine on the dyno. The megasquirt guys will wire up today and tomorrow and 80% dyno run as early as tomorrow. Then we'll put it back into the car along with new;
1. front recro sports seats.
2. steering wheel.
3. dash.
4. 300km/h gauge cluster.
5. 2 by plx gauges.
Then off to the megasquirt rolling road for final tuning.

It is hooked up but needs further plumbing. The first bench dyno will be an 80% dyno only. We'll then put the engine in the car and take it to Megasquirt's rolling road for the final 80%.
Just called the engine builder. Some minor wiring to complete and he has called the Megasquirt guys who have stated are available this week.
Here's hoping.

While I'm awaiting the ever illusive engine dyno my gauge cluster finally turned up today. It turned up in Jan but then got sent back but finally, after turning up in the Netherlands 2 weeks ago, is finally on my desk. Apparently 2 old waxed banana boxes were used in the packaging and Australian Customs were worried something may have crawled from a banana 20 years ago (these were old boxes lying on the floor of Ivo's BMW shop for years) and into my gauge cluster. So we Fedex'd it last week. Here's some pretty picks of it on my desk. RPM and speed to match the projected engine results.

Same.
There has been a build up for sure. Hope it’s soon now for Josh’s sake.

If it’s “hooked up” the dyno mustn’t be used often. Hope all is well and nothing has gone wrong there.

The dyno is used a lot. As usual, between mechanic and engine builder there are issues. So here it is.
Engine has been on the dyno hooked up since the date of the photo above. Note that;
1. My mechanic Ellie is a good friend. He is an S14 specialist/tragic. His daughter is married to the engine builders son.
2. Tony, the engine builder, has way way way too much work. He is a skilled craftsman and builds race and drag engines. Usually carbi'd.
3. Tony's business is not fine tuned and he is short on skilled staff. Meaning he does a lot himself.
4. Tony finished a 2.7 stroker M20 for Ellie and it was blowing flames. It was the engine before mine.
5. As all know, finding a good engine builder is hard. Tony is a great engine builder but short block and big block engines are his bread and butter.
6. A joint family tragedy saw the dyno run of last week delayed.
7. Between Tony's bread and butter, countless sensors and other items needed to be placed into block, sump and head so again we were delayed. Engine brackets came back incorrectly fabricated so Tony did them himself.
8. Tony confirmed on Monday that he is ready to start the engine and then call down the megasquirt specialists to tune it.
9. They are expecting a one day tune but it may go to 2 days.
10. Tony is not an ECU specialist, usually dealing with carbi's only. Hence needing to line up the megasquirt guys.
So as you can see, fiddly, real life in the way, sub consultants needed to be lined up, lot's of final prep on the engine and ancillaries.
Once the engine is done this week it is back to Ellie and then into the car. My JPS racing engine (for the E3) goes on next as once dyno'd, it will be back in the car and running after one day's work. And the adapter plate Tony needed to make to have the bench dyno accept the S38 will still be there so the M30 get's slipped in next. Then Tony has two big block race engines to dyno.
I think a lot of the issue is just how busy Tony is and that he has not dealt with many BMW engines before nor with the Megasquirt.
I'll call him again today. Talking to him two days ago he said it would definitely be dyno'd and back with Ellie Saturday.
Ellie and I are keen to do some supersprints with the BMW car club with both cars.

I am so over the delays. But such is life. My desperation level, on a scale of 1 to 10, is 16.37!
I'll call again today. Hopefully being done. I'm at the point where I'm ready to pick it up whether or not it is dyno'd. But anyone who has ever resto'd a car has probably been there. I've been there with this car with every one who has worked on it.

Spent some time with the mechanic and engine builder on the engine dyno last Sunday. Long story short, all wired up and nowhere to go.
Running an M20 fly wheel as the bench dyno connection sees significant machining to accept the flywheel and they did not want to ruin mine. This means an M20 starter motor that would you believe throws out the cog 7mm less than the M30 starter motor. So gears not meshing.
We got it to kick over some 5 times before the starter motor gear stripped its cog corners. We will get an auto electrician to extend the trow on the starter motor.
Some picks.
All wired up, Haltech ignition control. Megasquirt for the ECU.

no reading on the dyno yet.
Plan is to have the modified starter motor in the next day or so. Then we will turn over, get oil pressure and then run in on base tune. Specialist then called in to tune the megasquirt.
Engine builder confirmed he will dyno up to 8500 rpm as long as it is making power. He'll stop the dyno where power stops and let the experts fiddle the last 10% to 20% from there.

That engine looks good, what head is that that it has the injectors op top? What is the hp/Nm in base trim and how much are you expecting after al your upgrades?
The engine is an S38B38. It is a B38 head. Base trim is 250kw : 340hp/400nm of torque. I would expect given the work done somewhere between 380hp and 400hp. But honestly, a working engine in a working car would be wonderful. Anything above stock power and torque is always a plus.

We cannot get the starter motor to throw out further. So I've given Tony the go ahead to machine my fly wheel (stock) and I'll purchase a high performance flywheel as per the link. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BMW-Chro...gAAOSwR5dXSDwF

Wow! Beautiful. I can see why your getting antsy to drive this. That is some work going on there.
Flywheel is machined and back in the engine shop. Here's hoping startup is just days away. My bank account is about to be hammered. E3 racer had engine in Saturday.
