No, But I'll upgrade to the mechanical LSD later in the year. My Renault RS265 got written off so I had to stretch to get this as my Renault was nearly 6 years old and the payout was not brilliant. The M140i has $5k of extras, just not where I wanted them. To spec a car myself I needed to wait until a late June delivery. This way the car is landed March 16 and delivered a week later. The car came pre-spec'd.
With the mechanical LSD it is close to an M3/M4 for handling and with a JD4 box, will pump out 320kw and keep up with an M3/M4. i'll keep it stock though bar the mechanical LSD. Right now I need a car and am sharing my wife's X5 so was simply not willing to wait 5 months.

I apologize if you mentioned this, but I didn't see it, with the push to spin up to some high rpm, what sort of vibration/harmonic balancer are you putting on the front of the engine?
Thanks and thanks for sharing. It has been very fun and information to follow your progress.

Eric, I'll check with the engine builder. He has been snowed under and I've told him I need to start hammering him if being polite does not work. Seeing my mechanic tomorrow to discuss tactics. The engine builder promised the engine early Jan, then late Jan, then Feb .... blah blah blah. We all know how it goes.
The new gauge cluster from Ivo Christov has been posted Ivo has some great stuff on his website and ebay store. You can find him here. Based in Netherlands but great English and a great honest guy with a really good rep. https://www.e28.nl/en/

Just had a call from the engine builder. He completely refurbished the head. New valve guides. Re-seated all valves.
I am not holding my breath as I've been told a dyno date before, but;
1. My mechanic is hammering the engine builder and heads across twice a week now to check on progress.
2. The engine builder has never called me with an update before.
3. Pic below details the refurbished head.
4. Engine builder stated that Megasquirt guy is across next week to hook it all up and, that ready for dyno by end of week.
5. I stated that it was the Easter weekend and a 4 day holiday. Engine builder noted this and said to be fair engine should be dyno'd week after Easter.
So close now. Not holding my breath and not asking Bert to either. He would though as Bert is that sort of guy. He's my hit-man when I need him.
Also just had a call from my BMW dealer and my new M140i was just delivered from the port and is booked in for a pickup next Tuesday at 1pm. Looking forward to that. 3.0 litre turbo'd straight 6! What's not to like???!!!

Hi,
From your picture we can see the
permissible mark is long gone from
the factory spec when you skim cyl
head. It's not a bad idea to check the
cyl head thickness to make sure it's
not skimmed too much. With this
much material out your CR will raise
I would guess without having the
cyl head in my hands about 0.2-0.3CR.
Cyl dome volume has been reduced
as well but you will not feel the loss
at all.
Timing will change as well but
you have adjustable cam gears and
not a problem.
What Brand shim under the bucket
did you get ? one from VAC ?
Good job on the cluster now you
match your power.
Keep us posted.
Regards,
Anri

Ahh.
Good progress.
Hope its it’s all smooth sailing from here. Modifying cars teaches you to have good resilliance.
Remember this is only the first step in building a great car. The poor old chassis is going to need plenty of work also to deal with the engine. I think u have upgraded some bushes etc which is a good start.
U will like the 140i as well for sure. No doubt the temptation to reflash the ecu will be one that is hard to resist. I’m pretty sure bmw offer (or used to offer) upgraded ecu tunes from the factory with no warranty issues.
Must be the time of the month for getting projects back. I get my 540i back on Sunday all fully tuned. No idea on the hp but calculating from the fuel we have 75% duty on 60lb/h injectors (x8) and with 2.4bar fuel pressure we are nudging 570-600bhp @ flywheel. Even on sticky tyres it barely hooks up in 2nd gear. We are seeing 11psi at the 7000rpm cut. Again suspension will need some sorting but at least the e34 chassis can inherently cope with big hp.

Update,
blank engine back together. My mechanic confirmed he has seen it back together without ancillaries. I called the engine builder who noted that;
1. The slotted gears I had made were garbage.
2. Luckily, Pip Barker from the JPS racing team sent up a set. He said I could use them as long as I give him my old ones and pay for slotting. Turns our these are a spare set for the JPS Group C 635.
3. The timing was out. If Tony (engine builder) got the inlet cam right the exhaust cam was out. So we increased the slots in the exhaust cam a minute amount.
4. Ancillaries on this week and early next week.
5. Specialist dialled in for late next week to wire in the Megasquirt PRO III.
We are hoping to be in a position by the end of next week to dyno up. Luckily Tony has the bench dyno in his shop so as soon as it is ready it will go from one room to the next.
I'll go visit and take some vids of the dyno process.

This is a cool thread - keep updating us!
Called the mechanic today. He mentioned that Tony the engine builder had called him earlier and that he was putting the rocker cover back on. The mechanic sent me these photos today, taken last week.
The issue re the timing must be sorted. Tony was elongating the slotted holes on one of the cam gears on Tuesday.
Mechanic noted Tony is now placing back all ancillaries and has asked for the MegaSquirt. Getting there.

Red color valve cover looks attractive
and so do upcoming overheating issues
will match the valve cover color.

Anri,
The car runs an oil cooler and 540i radiator. We'll test first and see how she goes.

The oil pan is the B36 pan. Note that we will bench dyno this engine within hopefully the next two weeks. If she runs hot I'll simply buy a full race radiator and may consider this now with the race engine builder. After all I've been through I want it right and will ensure we run at the right temps under 95% performance.

Shipper,
Some times I feel like you don't know the parts
you are installing in your project.
Have you seen B36 oil pan ? if so you will
change your answer.
The B36 is front pan (E34M5). All E24 oil
pans are more Mid Oil pan configuration.
Also on the B36 the oil Life/Level sensor is located
on the bottom of the pan Not on the Side like the one
installed in your engine and it's plugged.

Anri

It could be correct. Ask Sven. He had the engine in an E30. He may have changed the sump.
The engine is with race engine builders. They build mopar, race and drag engines. I'm sure that they will not let the engine out the door unless it is running perfectly.
I appreciate your concern. Hell I've got so much $$$$$ in it so spending a few dollars on better cooling is nothing. I'll post final build pics and dyno pics/vid and take on board any comments or recommendations prior to placing the engine in the car.

Anri,
Talked to my mechanic and he noted that he and the race engine builder were discussing a full blown race engine radiator for the car. So I now expect the current radiator to go into the spare parts pile.
Engine is now with the megasquirt specialist being wired up. Should be back and in the bench dyno cue early next week.

Having two race engines ready at the one time is a financial nightmare. Here's a few shots of my E3 2 door racers engine delivered last week by the JPS racing teams engine builder. Expecting 350hp plus. 3.6 litre. You can just see parts of my 633 in the background of some shots. Megasquirt being wired up today and half there. PLX gauges also being wired up now. Hopefully dyno next week. Then the M30B35 race engine here will be dyno'd straight after.
