Zero chance of that happening for a safety recall. They do not want that liability if you were injured in an accident and the parts were not replaced correctly.

100% correct. If the parts don't get returned, the technician doesn't get paid. Ive done at least 3 of these recalls this week alone on the e46 chassis. (plus a few others) it's a fairly quick repair, and to be completely honest, I've never pulled a fuse, just dc the battery and start pulling it apart. The driver's side can be eithrr just the ignitor or the whole pad depending on the wheeel. The passenger is always the whole airbag unit.

FYI the airbag recall is still available in the UK.

I've just been advised to book my E46 in for both Drivers and Passenger Airbag replacement, so will need to do so once I've arranged for some other repairs first.

Definitely still going on here in Canada.

For Canadians who want to know if their vehicle is affected they should use the new site provided by BMW Canada.

Bought my first BMW (2004 325I sedan) on Saturday 10/14/18. Ran the VIN last night looking for recalls and it shows an open recall for passenger side airbag. Texted the closest dealership while registering the car at DMV today. Have an appointment for Thursday morning at no cost to me. Gotta say I'm impressed I'm the 4th owner and the car has 215K miles, but runs, looks, and drives like a dream.

I got to the dealer at 11am for airbag recall. They finished at 1pm with wash & vacuum. and brand new bags.

    Quick question

I removed side airbags (I know this was stupid in hindsight)...but the media hyped up the fear “metal shrapnel” should I reinstall them before my appointment for the recall

Anyone have any idea how to stop the notifications for this recall? I seem to get at least one monthly. The car was totaled a couple years ago. Ironically, the airbags did not deploy. Thanks!

I would call BMWNA customer care at 1-888-594-3832 and give them your vin.

BMW will continue to attempt to contact you until the recall has been completed, so do let them know that car was totaled.

yeah, the initial replacement was an "interim" fix. They just replaced the old shitty airbag with a new shitty airbag that would have the same problems later in life, but presumably wouldn't blow shrapnel in your face if it went off.

I'm getting mine done, both the 330 and my 740 on May 1. That long away they're so busy.
Lets get the party started before it's my bedtime.

I took my 2001 325xi to Moses BMW in st albans,wv..they 'said that they did the steering wheel and the passenger side air bags..They had my car in the shop for 25 minutes..It came out with the air bag light on and the "telltale" small pieces of clear tape still in place where I had put them before it went in..I got BMW NA involved..After some 6 weeks, BMWNA said that the work had been done and that my air bags were not talking to the computer that threw the seatbelt and air bag fault lights..Use this dealer at your own risk..I asked them to check the fluids..Their"mechanic" had the nerve that he could not open the hood. I walked the manager out to my car, opened the hood, and called BMW NA again..from the parking lot..handed the phone to the manager..heated debate for a few minutes..My fluids were checked..

To be fair, the E46 driver and passenger airbags can be replaced in less than 25 minutes.

True, 25-30 minutes, less if you have the sport steering wheel.

Remember that all dealerships are not created equal, that is why it is always best to take to the local BMWCCA chapter to see what they recommend.

The website just says that the remedy is currently being developed. Odd for it being years after the recall was announced. 99 328i E46

Found out recently that the passenger airbag I had replaced a couple years ago was the "interim" repair. Just had the "final remedy" done last week.
