E46 Drivers and Passenger Air Bag Recall

    Ladies and Gents,

A head's up for all of you. Take your car to the dealership to get the passenger airbag replace. There is a recall going on, if you have any questions, have a read: http://www.autoblog.com/2014/07/16/b...call-official/

Or you can contact BMW Customer Relations and Services at 1-800-831-1117.

For general information regarding safety recalls, please call the BMW Recall Hotline at (800) 525-7417.

I have two that are effected, so I will be bothering the dealership on Monday.

If you have the Sports wheel, then it too will need to be replaced, but do call first or check the web link out first: http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...eoverride=true

So just to put some prospective on it, the link didn't have my 325it recall for the driver's airbag, but it did have the M-3's. When I went in to get an appointment for the M-3, I inquired about my Sports Packaged 325it, and they said yes, that Airbag needs to be replaced as well.

Thank you for posting - might never have known otherwise, since I don't use the dealership at all.

Easy there, guys. The recall hasn't been released yet, "BMW has informed the NHTSA of its intent to voluntarily recall .... ". Calling the dealer with your VIN will likely yield a response of, "there aren't any open recalls on your vehicle."

It's great that BMW is concerned for their customers safety, it's unfortunate that some dealers do not care if they sell cars with open recalls. I bought my 325i from a dealer who did not and after three attempts at splicing and rewiring/improperly grounding my taillights I took my car to a BMW dealer and was advised of the recall. The repair was done correctly the forth time, anyway when I found this out I filed a complaint with the Attorney Generals Office and forwarded all of my documentation. The dealership was served an official warning and there is also a pending investigation, btw my car was inspected at two other dealerships prior to my purchase. Thankfully my car didn't catch on fire due to the exposed wires.

Odd news, went to see if my two E-46's were recalled, and I was told "No". So time to send an email to BMWNA to make sure.

Although the recall has been announced, it still hasn't been officially released. Oh, but it has been expanded to include more vehicles. Now there's like a half-million vehicles affected. I'll post up here as soon as I hear about it being released.

I received a cryptic email from customer care, something along the lines of since I am not in the U.S. my cars don't fit the recall. But yes do keep us infromed if you hear when it will go live, thanks!

Okay, checked the website today and found that the M3 was recalled, but not my Wagon. Not sure as both cars were built on the same line, but I guess the Coupe has a different airbag then the wagon does.

I think so, as I went to a dealership yesterday and both were recalled. However they don't have an ETA on when the air bags will be in as there is about a million vehicles effected. As for the website, my wagon is a canadian spec vehicle, it was inside the USA for the first 5 years of it's life. That is one problem with the BMW Military purchase program at the time, I am sure it has been fixed with the newer models.

Just called in my car and there's no recalls on mine. It states all E46 models from 2000-2006 but in the fine text it also says cars made in May 1999 - 2006 as well.

    Confused.

Mine says the same thing, but the dealer DCS shows that this recall applies to my vehicle, but is "pending". So it's not yet ready to be performed.

    I'll update when that changes.

    SUBJECT
Recall: Expanding 2013 Front Passenger Air Bag System

    MODEL
    E46 (3 Series)

Produced from June 1999 through August 2006

    Situation
BMW has become aware that there may be potentially further issues involving the front passenger air bag system of certain BMW 3 Series vehicles, including M3 models. As a cautionary measure, BMW has decided to expand the 2013 Recall to cover Model Year 2000-2006 BMW 3 Series vehicles, including M3 models. The front passenger air bag will be replaced.

Obviously, they were mistaken. While your specific VIN may not be involved in the recall, that production date IS included.

I just got my recall notice today. It reads:
    IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
This notice applies to your vehicle, WBAEV33443xxxxxxx (14V 428)
    September 2014
Recall Campaign No. 14V-428: Front Passenger Air Bag
    Dear BMW Owner / Lessee:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
BMW AG has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain model year 2000 to 2006 BMW 3 Series vehicles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
    IMPORTANT NOTICE
At this time we do not have parts to conduct this recall; however, we will notify you as soon as parts become available. At that time, you should make an appointment with your authorized BMW center in order to have this recall performed on your vehicle.
    DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
Our air bag supplier has advised BMW that in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front passenger's air bag, excessive internal pressure could cause rupturing of the air bag inflator, resulting in metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the front passenger or other passengers.
Please note that, as an intended design feature, if the front passenger seat is not occupied, the front passenger air bag will not deploy in a crash.
    PRECAUTIONS FOR YOU SAFETY
    1. If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all.other drivers and passengers of this important information.
    DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR
The front passenger air bag will be replaced.
The actual repair will require approximately three hours, however additional time may be required depending on the BMW center's schedule. This work will be performed free of charge by your authorized BMW center.
