So I purchased this scan tool (the same one everyone uses with PA Soft) from Newegg and it arrived yesterday. I promptly attempted to plug it into my car via the 20 pin connector and was met with the IKE/EWS connection error. I took apart the module and connected pins 7 and 8 via copper wire (ghetto, sorry). Tried plugging it in again, and nothing. Again, read some stuff about pins 1 and 2 needing to be connected, so I attempted the same with more copper wire. Plugged it and and still got the darn IKE/EWS connection error. At this point I'm out of ideas and thinking that possibly my scan tool is just DOA and doesn't work.
Any ideas?
PS yes I did install the drivers correctly on the computer, etc
What year is your car?
After the IKE/EWS error, try double clicking on each of the different ECU families you have on the first page. It will try to connect with each one individually and you might be able to find out if it can talk to anything.
If you have the round connector under the bonnet, try using that if you aren't already.

Have you tried it via the OBD port under the dash?
Which version of software did it come with? ( v1.4.0.9, etc)
No I haven't, but that's because I read that you needed to use the under hood 20 pin connector on E36s. I actually haven't booted the software from the CD it came with, I used the software found on the "x(something)360" site which is another vendor that sells these readers. Their name escapes me at the moment but the zip file calls it version 1.4.
I think you'll have wanted to buy the earlier 1.3.6 version for an E36.

It uses different hardware, so you'll need a new interface.

1.3.6 should do it, otherwise you'd need an ADS interface and INPA.
Either way, you'll be needing a serial port on your laptop.

I have a nice old Dell Latitude D420 working ADS cable with INPA and DIS via VM. Would PA soft also work through that?
