I don't see why not. The OE nav head 4:3 or 16:9 can be swapped between the two... Every US E38 is going to have DSP though, which is probably why its not marketed to that vehicles owners. Perhaps once the DSP fix firmware is released it can be used...

That's what I was thinking but I hear the the older ones didn't fit. If it doesn't work with dsp. I'll just bypass the whole thing. No biggie
No they dont fit the E38....not without a custom install at least. The HVAC airbox intrudes from the right side (think about how the stock stereo is offset to the left). Ive seen a couple guys make it work but it wasnt easy....

Ah, I didn't think of that. Cutting and clearancing the HVAC housing is a major PITA, even with one of those JANUS kits.
Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast
You cant even cut up the airbox on the E38 as the airbox motors are in that location.....cant cut those out!!!
Its the dynavin that has to get "split"....brackets made, wiring rerouted.......a custom job and not recommended unless you are a custom installer.

Just push it in as far as it goes and use a bungie cord across the face to hold it to the dash.

Jeff, you have my business if you can get this to work in a DSP/Nav car. Looking forward to the update.

The chassis must always be regarded as a means to an end and never as an end itself
My current profession is being a audio installer. I guess i didn't look at the rear of the dynavin that well and I'm well aware of the hvac crisis. I guess I'll stick to buying a parrot media play for the e38 in the future.

Yeah, there are not a lot of options out there for the E38 7 series guys....Ive asked dynavin to work on it though, once we have the DSP things working (should be VERY soon) I think we can get something going....That plus eliminating the DVD/CD drive could make it all work. The dynavin E9X unit just went "driveless" to fix some install clearance issues....so the electronics are already done, just in a different application....doing the same for a 7 series unit could solve the HVAC airbox fit issues. Im working on it.....

I for one don't care about a transport mechanism. I used to, but with FLAC and and thousands of lossless songs on a memory card the size of a fingernail? No CD's thanks.
I still have plenty of CD's of course, but once I rip the tracks I want to FLAC they just go in a binder never to see the light of day again.

Jeff,
Is the screen bigger as a result of having no optical drive? It certainly seems like so.
I don't mind getting rid of that either. Never used it, never will.
Resident Third World Country Advisor
Well....in the case of the E9X model it allowed us to go from a 6.2" screen up to a 7" screen.....same as all the other dynavin models. But since the E39 already has the larger screen size I would not expect any larger.

Yeah, I converted my library a few years back...seriously tedious work.....but now my CDs have been boxed up and banished to the garage where they are slowly turning to dust.....and my entire library now lives on multiple micro SD cards in my cars, on multiple computers, on my phone, and in the cloud. Awesome.....

It wasn't that bad for me. I use dBPowerAmp to rip and it can rip an entire CD to flac in about 5 minutes. Just a few tracks even faster. It pulls track names etc off the net so you don't even have to type anything...
Did you confirm the maximum microSD card size? I'm debating on buying a 64gb or 128gb card...
Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast
Every time I see this thread get bumped, I get excited ... and then disappointed.
The issue when I converted was the fact that I had about 500 CDs.....so whether the ripping process was quick or not, or whether your files auto tag or not, 500 CDs is tedious no matter how you cut it....
I just this weekend got everything dropped onto a 64GB SDXC card, got all my album art properly tagged, it was a bit of a pain as I had some "technical difficulties" with my computer along the way....not to mention the infamous exFAT formatting that these new breed of eXtended Capacity card have....BUT the dynavin recognized the exFAT card and had no issues playing MP3s from it.....My wifes brand new Audi for comparison DID NOT recognize this card and I had to force FAT32 onto it to make it work in her car (windows will not do this by default).
Dynavin FYI publishes a max card size of 64GB in the manual and Ive never heard of anyone going higher....it does get prohibitively expensive with the HUGE cards....
Now that ive got everything on the card Im convinced that is the way to go.....using the folder directory seems like a good, no-compromise way to browse music if you are the Artist>Album>Song kind of person.....It loads very fast (if you used tagged browsing it takes longer), displays album art, allows you to use the "slider" to jump to different parts of the tracks, and requires no external devices (like ipod).
BUT, success here depends entirely on YOUR ability to manage YOUR music library....the music files must be of a compatible format, there must not be corrupt junk mixed in, they must be correctly set in the right directories, tagged correctly, etc.... In my experience the probability for "user error" here is high....
Settle down....DSP is important and its being worked on....but there is plenty of discussion to be had besides that!

I got my Dynavin N6 installed today, I've installed a few previous units so no surprises and it went smoothly. I need to adjust the wires so it will snap in tight but I ran out of day light and its not going anywhere between now and tomorrow.
Sound quality wise I'm impressed, this unit is a notable step above the D99 in fidelity. Time will tell as I listen to more of my favorite music I know well, but so far so good!
Nav picked up 8 satellites quickly and looks/works great.
HOW ON EARTH to I change the time on this thing?
Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast
Yes, the N6 is pretty solid sounding..... The D99s were ok but the N6 is really good in that regard.
In the system settings menu you just set your time zone, it pulls the actual time from the sats. You would be GMT -5? I think?
Dont forget to email me about the software we talked about on the phone....its not 100% finished so its not for everyone (yet) but I think you will want it based on what I know about your audio system.
