530i Doors

Hello all. I'm a former board member from my time as an owner of a 2000 540i, which sadly got a bit too much of the old tin worm to keep a few years back. My cousin recently came into possession of a very well maintained 2002 530i that had belonged to his mom when she got a new car. I think it's around 130000 miles or so, and generally in quite good shape. today he asked me a question about whether the doors on my 540i had stayed open on their own or not. It seems that the door brake or whatever you call the prop that provided the detents that the doors will stay at once opened have gone bad. I did a search for door brake here, but couldn't come up with anything. Could anyone guide me to the right terminology to find the offending part and possibly a DIY for replacement?

The E39 front door brakes always were flaccid, even when new. When parked on an incline, they were almost useless.

Well, a new one is still much better than an old worn one like the one in my drivers door on my green wagon, with only 88,000 miles on it. My silver ‘03 wagon with 371,000 miles on it surprisingly is like new, maybe Chip, the original owner swapped it out before he decided to pass the baton to me.
