I was driving around this weekend and out of nowhere I noticed that the car wasn't shifting gears up or down anymore and on the dashboard was "cogwheel of death" with an exclamation mark. It reverses normally and it seems like in drive its in gear 3. I haven't had a chance to take it in for diagnosis as yet.. Is the gear selector supposed to disappear from the dashboard when into goes into limp mode? Before all of this . it only had a cogwheel displayed and my mechanic suspected a faulty MAF.
Yes when the vehicle is in limp mode it will display the cogwheel in place of where the "D" would be on the cluster. A bad MAF as well as several other ailments can cause limp mode.
In limp mode, the vehicle will lock in to 3rd or 4th gear. Its not a smart idea to drive it around for very long in limp mode.
