    1986 735i high comp

    Hey there.

I've been doing a little side project (while doing other projects) as I purchased a nice E23. After seeing the rear electric seats and buffalo leather I just had to have it. It was a little unloved, and needed the heater core replaced (32hrs!!) but its been running pretty well of late, so Ill just share the journey with you chaps.

The chrome strips just had to go, and fitted some naked throwing stars, also cleaning up the interior a little

Then for some ACS 3 piece wheels and some Doc baileys leather black. It works really well on restoring black leather, without making it look like its been painted.

Then I decided the high comp m30b34 was just not powerful enough. Also I had a worn cam lobe making an annoying tapping noise.

A B35 head with porting work and matched manifold found its way magically into the engine bay. It has dual valve springs, adjustable cam wheel, Dbilas 292 cam, etc.

I got sick of the hard riding on the ACS wheels, and someone offered me good money for them so I installed some 16" rims back on the car. The majestic ride of the E23 has been restored.

This is where the car sits now.

Currently its running on the std computer, and Ive dumped some fuel in at idle (adjusting the spring tension on the air meter), but its too rich everywhere else, and the computer pulls out timing the richer it is. It still goes as well as before but once the tune is sorted, it will go well. This head in an E28 made 210rwhp which hopefully it will make similar power when sorted.

Im going to tune it with a wideband/AF guage, and a little fuel load point adjuster so I can still dump fuel in at idle, but have it have the correct mixtures everywhere else. I may even up the fuel pressure slightly, then I can remove more fuel via the fuel load point adjuster and the ECU will think its running leaner and add even more timing. Well thats the plan.

Also I will add an Mtech steering wheel (from my E24), as I'm having an Mtech2 coarse spline wheel made up for it.

I like where this is headed...your mods are very well chosen IMHO.

Heck of a garage you have there too!

Thought that was a right hand drive 745 for a minute. Your car looks awesome. I really liked those ACS wheels.

yes Im starting to collect afew 80's and 90's bmw's.

I liked the look of the ACS but not the ride. If I go back to a 17" rim ill run the tallest tyre possible, say 235/50 or 245/50 to get the best ride I can. Id love to put on my BBS-RS wheels off the 6. I have another metric set but TRX tyres are no good, so id have to put metric barrels on them. Depends if I keep this car.

Im also planning on installing a 3.73:1 LSD instead of the open 3.25:1. Its way too tall now. Once the tune is sorted it may cope with the tall gearing better, but the lower gears will give it more punch off a standing start.

The old motor revved cleanly to 7000rpm but made its peak power at 5400 due to the manifold. With the auto its about where it changes gear at full throttle anyway, so no plans at this stage to run a manual. I have 3 other manual bmw's anyway so it makes a nice change to jump into an auto.

    Thumbs up

This thread excites my loins. I love Executive interiors with Becker radios still installed!

Do not fear gear out back, with a manly camshaft installed you should consider at least a 3.91:1 and a restalled torque converter.
    I make E23 parts.

yes even lower diff would be good, but i already have a 3.73 so it will still be abit of a cruiser. Straight line sprinting talent is not high on the agenda, but improvements are always welcome.

Im keeping it all old school. The radio even has a Din5 which I was able to get a 3.5mm plug to work on it so my Iphone can play music through the OEM head unit which is kinda cool. I should upgrade those speakers as they sound rather bad. I put those polk flat 4x6 in the e24 which sound pretty good so they will go in the front, and probably some bigger speakers in the parcel shelf.

Not sure about the hi-stall converter.

what would be good is an upgraded transmission computer. It would be good if it could hang onto gears with a few more rpm say 6300 or so at full throttle. Surely one exists, I can recall that Dinan made such a computer. Maybe there is one for the M745i that they used in South Africa behind the M88/3, but I dont like my chances.

Even though i have quite a few nice BMW's if all the keys are on the table I often take the humble E23 as its a nice place to sit in, and its very comfortable and relaxed.

Can you run the VIN (last 7 digits) through http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html and post up the options list?

Not often we see the Buffalo and Burl on anything except a 745i here in the states. Those were options, including the Executive trim level that were not available here. We did get the Highline all leather interior in the L7 during the last year or so of production.

Hey there. I'll get around to doing the vin ID.
    I've been pretty busy.

I have got the style 5 wheel caps and put new Bmw stickers on them. Put a slightly smaller spacer on the rear as it was rubbing.

Also so I have just ordered one of those fuel intercepors from 14point7.com. They basically correct the fuel map interrupting the signal from the air meter to the ecu. This will help make the engine run nice with the big cam. I've basically made it rich so it idles good but it kills timing and overfuels at the mid range and top end.
Hope I will have it from Toronto in 3 weeks or so

The poor old E23 has not had much love until recently.

I replaced the oversized 225/55/16 Tires with 205/55/16 as they looked like a 70's hot rod especially on the rear. Had a nice welcome bonus with the smaller dia has the effect of a slight gearing change, which wakes the car up a tiny bit. I installed the Mtech steering wheel from the 635, which looks nicer than the old london bus style one.

My mechanic fiddled with the air meter to put some fuel in at idle to reduce the lope, but its a little compromised, so I picked up a miller war chip with maf. Ill get this installed shortly. I still havent installed the 3.73:1 lsd. My 2002 that is taking up space will be finished shortly so the 735i can get a mid life crisis. I would love to pick up an altered transmission chip, as I'm happy to keep it an auto. Ive tried for 3yrs, perhaps I need to canvas M745i owners to do a copy. The dinan chip seems to be almost unobtainium. If anyone has any leads on one it would be greatly appreciated.

I have been concentrating on getting the 7er to the point where everything works. The only things now are the AC, and the transmission switch to swap the modes doesnt work. Everything else is all good (for the moment). I replaced the in cabin lights with the LED sheets (in warm white) so its nice and bright in there without that harsh laboritory white of std LED globes.

Just recently installed an upgraded sound system. Nothing over the top just a Kenwood head unit (for the red display), coupled with a pioneer 4channel amp with some polk 6x9 in the rear, and some polk 6x4 in the front. It sounds so much better than the OEM becker mexico. As the 735i cabin is so well insulated, it sounds so clear and crisp compared to the E24 chassis, and I can play music through my phone now (not cassettes) which is kindof exciting if you live in Kazakhstan. The hands free phone system works great also as there is a big fine here for using a phone while driving.

A few extra things that have surfaced. The heater doesnt fully switch off so I have a new heater valve to install. Also some good news it looks like I will have access to a M745i (south african) transmission computer. This will give the factory transmission some higher shift points and more eager kickdown perfromace. Ill have to make some eprom copies of the chip and hopefully it will work in our car seeing its the same vintage. Should work also in the E24 and E28 auto boxes. You would need to run either a miller war chip or upgraded aftermaket engine chip as the redline on the M745i is 6900. If you use with the std engine chip you will have the transmission call to shift higher than the cutout so it will confuse it. Its probably more suited to modified m30's that can spin a few extra rpm. This with the upcoming 3.73 diff should make a world of difference to the old cruiser.

My 2002 is nearly finished - only a few more weeks. So finally can get stuck into sorting my e23. They are such a nice car to drive it will be great to get it running as good as it can

One really good thing to happen out of a few errors on my 2002 is we run into piston to valve clerance issues. We had an m30 head jig made up so we can have valve relief pockets cut into m10 or m30 pistons without removing them. The exciting thing is I can get rid of the 140thou MLS and put the OEM gasket (70thou) so my comp will go from high 9's to low 11's. May even get a thin MLS to get as much comp as I can. Mid 11's will really make the cam work better and more efficiently and the engine will come alive. I have also got a miller war chip ready to go.

So upgrades will be as follows.:
    • miller war chip with maf
    • 3.73:1 LSD (upgrading the 3.25:1 single)
    • upgraded comp to 11.0-11.5:1
    • m745i transmission chip (South Africa)

its good fun to drive now but should be a hoot when done. The head/cam conbo I have now made 210rwhp with 11.3:1 comp which is smack bang in alpina m30 power levels.

Oh and also installed a nardi 3 spoke (copy) steering wheel. Looks great but it's a tad to small at 350dia so I ordered another at 375mm. Can't see the top increments on the speedo and tachometer.
The Audio install worked nice. Initially the subwoofer had little impact so (purists look away now) I cut a sizeable opening in the rear seat bulkhead and sealed the sub with some closed cell foam to Te opening and removed the leather square and sound deadening. Massive difference.

Finally I installed some 25mm spacers and 35mm spacers for the e39 cross spoke wheels. Fill the guards nice without any tyre scrape. Make it look more modern for sure.

Ill do some pics shortly as forums love pics

Well I got rained off work yesterday so I decided to play amatuer mechanic and make iti diff swap time. I've seen it done a few times but never done it myself especially in pouring rain and under car ramps and jack stands. I used the large case e24 3.73 LSD replacing the single spinner 3.25. The old diff came out pretty easy as there is no rear anti-roll bar on the e23. Could even leave the exhaust in place also.

Trial fitting the the new diff I had to swap the rear cover as the rear diff mount housing is slightly longer on the e23 than the e24. Thanks BMW. But no big deal. I had a fair it of Trouble getting the 2 bolts that mount the diff to the subframe on. It turns out that the mounting holes are slighly different from e23 to e24 also. The e23 diff has about 80mm from front to rear bolt mounts where the e24 has 100mm! Had to slot out the subframe with a dremmel and a drill bit. The upper bolt holes in the subframe are pretty close to the fuel tank so I had to be real careful. I only wanted to take out as much as I needed so I trial fitted it a few times.

On on one of the trial fittings unfortunaly I accidentally removed the rear tail shaft section. There is no way to get it in with the exhaust in tact so I had to drop the very heavy exhaust and heat shield. I got the tail shaft in then finally after a few trial fittings all 4 top bolts fitted. Once this was done it all went back together pretty easily and quickly. Thank god. It took the best part of 7hrs in the cold and rain

Time to test drive. Always a little nervous but all went well. Still raining but I had so much more grip and the shorter gearing made it so much more urgent to drive. I'll load my tools in and take it for a longer drive this morning to work. Definelty worth the headache to fit. I'm a little sore this morning as being under a car on jack stands is not really a natural environment.

So so one item ticked off the list. Next I'll get the Miller war chip/ maf sorted. Hope this is a little easier physically.

Fitted slighly bigger dia (375mm) steering wheel as the smaller (350mm) one made it a little tricky to see the top section of the gauges.

The 201 SA code is the automatic transmission. 4-speed with three speed selectable.
Because you have rear leather, I believe that SA 682 is automatic antenna.
I am leaning to the 440 code as being the buffalo leather/burl walnut interior. I have not seen this one described for the E23, yet.
Some of the descriptions of the codes are for the newer cars as the numbers have been reused.

    Nice work on this one.

The 3.73 is probably a good gearing for the automatic. The end of the e23 came to the US with a 3.46 on the automatics.

    Keep up the good work.

I am quite intersted how you got the E24 wheel to fit the E23.

[/QUOTE]Also I will add an Mtech steering wheel (from my E24), as I'm having an Mtech2 coarse spline wheel made up for it.

Hey there. It just bolted straight on as both are coarse spine. The e23 the indicators wouldn't work must be a subtle difference somewhere. I recently just used a boss kit and now have an aftermarket wheel fitted

i real like the 3.73 ratio. Still gives sensible cruise rpm but gives a new found urgency with low speed acceleration. It still will be a little while but I can't wait to get back the extra compression into the engine and install the miller war chip. I have a few cars on the cusp of being finished so hopefully I get to mess around with it towards the end of the Calender year

    Thumbs up

    Any progress is good progress!

Diff swap makes a huge difference on the E23s with the HP22.
    I make E23 parts.

Yes the diff swap is massive.
Had abit of success with a few nagging issues. Firstly the brakes binding on in stop start traffic. Had one of the front brake lines that was taking an abnormal path which was possibly crushing when on the move. Also fully flushed out the fluid which is often overlooked. Transmission fluid was a tiny bit low causing some hunting and erratic downshifting. Just a small 200ml topup has the transmission playing ball now. Also had a nasty oil leak from the oil pressure switch. Replacement switch installed and no more leaking.

Fuel use has been pretty good also. On a recent trip was able to get 8.2 l/100km (28 mpg us)on a trip and around 12.5 l/100km (19 mpg us) which is pretty good for a crudely tuned 292deg cammed up auto in low diff gears.

Ill do a full transmission flush when the car is off the road. Also now it drives nicer I need to fix the 50mph shimmy. And some more horsepower from the extra Comp and warchip won't go astray either.

Not much love for the e23 lately but throats about to change.

I done a 3000mile round trip in it for the Aussie BMW nationals Easter this year and it's pretty well sat at home for a few months. Just picked up some bbs RS (006) 16x8 all round. They are correctly on the front now and awaiting tyres for the rear. I've also scored a few items mainly a set of m88 throttle bodies with plenum, and also a full down under Motorsport set of headers and exhaust. They are of an e28 so hope thy can fit the e23 without too much modifications.

Firstly once the wheels are on I'll get the war chip fitted and tuned, then start playin around with it more seriously.

Was also thinking about some more front neg camber. Was thinking of just slotting the bolt holes as I don't want nolethane mounts and the Ireland engineering offset mounts don't seem to work on the e23.

FINALLY got the war chip and Miller maf. Had to muck around a little soldering in a 28pin plug on the ecu. Boy what a difference it makes. Haven’t installed a wideband as yet but it has totally transformed the car. Just couldn’t get it to run anywhere near good even by adjusting the air meter. The 292deg cal just did not play ball. Bottom end is spectacular even have wheelspin from a standing start with the lsd. As photobucket has killed this thread I may need to upload some pics. Unfortunately when it was getting some work done someone reversed into the front grille and light. Only minor damage but it needs to be fixed. I will go to the shop soon and I’ll get the faded paint on the roof fixed at same time.

Finally its the car it should have been all the time. Very happy
