97' E31 840Ci Having problem to find center console part number.

    Hi All,

I decided to re-finish my both Center Consoles and Ordered a Brand New pieces from the Dealer because it is very in-expensive. It was going to take a lot of time to strip my existing one down and re-finish it.

Received the box today in the morning rushed to open it and I sow that BMW sold me the one that is from early years <'94 down or so... As well the long piece that is used as a pocket and ashtray next to the hand brake.

As I have noticed number of years ago that late E31 is using different center console. I am returning them back to BMW.

Please see the attachment and note the difference from the late version and early years version.

Also the second part# is the center console including the ashtray and storage pocket

    My Original '97 part# 2 254 349

The New (the one I received) Part# 8 108 930 is officially used as for all years 89 up to 99 ?....

If anybody has the original version I am ready to purchase it. I need this parts kind of quick.

Any thoughts and help will be appreciated !

    Regards
    Anri

You did get the correct center console but your original center console has (or had) wood trim. The center console with wood trim is shaped differently from the plastic ones (probably because it was impossible to make the veneer follow the contours of the original plastic center console).

    Revtor,

Thanks for your quick reply. It makes sense what you are saying and I agree. But, when I apply my full Vin# in the BMW system it shows me the early Plastic Version. ? How come is that possible ?

My car is Pre-production of 97 840Ci M62 and they all came for US market with Yellow color finish wood trim. Then I refinished it in Birds Eye Maple finish.

It does look like I have to strip my original down and refinish it again.

    Thanks
    Anri

Anri, can you comment on how you refinished the wood? Did you use chemical stripper or sandpaper. What finish did you use? Did you use the same OE-type Polyester?

Have you had BMW do a parts search using the part # on the console? That's what I did when I ordered mine a couple of years ago.

You can buy inserts with correct amount of openings and use it until you refinish unless you want to spend the money on one with wood trim (If available). Those are the only ones with the minimum slots as in your first picture.
