The .inf file should be fine.
Is it the one that came with it?
There are updated ones kn the FTDI web site if needed.
Are you installing the driver with the cable plugged into the computer and car and powered up? (Ignition on)
If not uninstall the drivers and try again all hooked up.
Wouldn't hurt to try. The thing is you just need to make sure it is powering up.

Try this attached set, seems it has more than just the .inf file.
(remove the .pdf extension and unzip them)
Okay this is the message I'm getting now....
It's saying unknown device but from what the PDF says its pose to say BMW Scanner V14x....
I'm using the driver that came with the cd

Watch the lights on the interface closely...
What do they do when you unplug and then plug the USB cable in?
What are they doing when plugged into the PC and the car?
Your very first pic is the one that concerns me. It shows green for drivers (good) and yellow for being plugged in (bad, meaning it's not plugged into the car).
When everything gets fully installed correctly that particular screen will never show up again. (with or without the cable plugged in)
I just did a fresh install on my house desktop to verify. I obviously can't plug into any car from here and guess what... "not plugged in".

The lights on the unit might help us determine what's going on here. Whether it's the install, the interface, or the car.
The yellow light is on
And I just tried the driver you gave me and no luck! I tried right clicking on the driver file and hit install and in the Xp warning box it does not come up as BMW Scanner V14x so I hit STOP Installation (look at pic below to see what I mean)

When you plug the USB cable/interface in and it wants to install drivers all you should have to do is choose "install from a specific location" and then "browse" to the folder the drivers are located in and pick that folder, not a specific file.
I believe they Windows stopped testing and certifying the latest drivers for XP, so that may be why your system is popping that up. I'm running XP SP3 on my desktop and it doesn't pop up though.
The yellow light just means it sees "battery" power from the car. It's the "ignition" power that I'm concerned with. Two different sources.
I mean there is no wrong way of installing it rite? You just put the cd in and install and after plug in interface to the car and USB on the laptop wait for use icon to show up then click on it and update driver hardware correct ? Or am I doing wrong ???

No, typically what you are doing should work just as well. I just like to keep it simple and let the system pick the driver after I tell it what folder to pick from just for peace of mind.
On your 20 pin harness adapter... With the Ignition ON... Can you measure pin #1 on the OBD side (where you plug the interface in) for 12v?
EDIT: With NO drivers installed... does the scanner EVER show up as being a BMW Scanner 14x or anything like that when you first plug the USB cable in? (with or without the car at this point)

My driver install sequence -
Plug interface into car, turn ignition switch ON, plug USB cable into interface, plug USB cable into computer....start driver install.

Good to know.

Also, right click and view the properties of your BMWScanner.exe and see what version it says it is.

Okay I will try those exact sets....
But here is a look inside my interface maybe you can tell me if its wired right
Two wires on pin 8 one on pin 16 pins 4 n 5 jump by one wire and one wire on pin 1

Are you using windows 98? I'm using XP
GearBox Rebuilt at 190K w/ TC & VB Silverline DUO TCU Bluetooth
The only thing wrong I see is where there are two wires on pin 8...move ONE of those wires over to pin 7, or just jumper from pin 8 over to pin 7, either way.
Mine came that way too, don't know why they even bother to ship them like that, makes no sense.
This is what was kind of mentioned in another thread you posted in. Shouldn't affect the initial installation at all though. You wouldn't even notice an issue until you started to read modules and some expected ones didn't show up. (7 & 8 are data lines to the modules)
I use XP for everything.

Okay will....
But just to be sure that is not the course of the problem I'm having rite now rite?
GearBox Rebuilt at 190K w/ TC & VB Silverline DUO TCU Bluetooth
Right. The jumpering thing has nothing to do with your current issue getting it installed and running.
What is the BMW Scanner software version?

This is the latest version I am using. (v1.4.0.9 dated 19.09.2011)

If the interface is faulty would the drive still install?
Because I really can't figure out what I'm doing wrong I been at this all day smh
GearBox Rebuilt at 190K w/ TC & VB Silverline DUO TCU Bluetooth
Yes, you can use the version I uploaded. Wouldn't hurt to try.
Just uninstall everything else first to get a fresh start.
The hardware could be faulty, but I personally have not seen one keep from I stalling. The bad units I have seen would at least let you get past that point and start the actual software before giving a faulty hardware error.
I would do two things -
1. Open device manager, plug your cable in, and whatever it pops up as...uninstall the drivers for it, unplug your cable.
2. Delete the whole BMWScan140 folder as you mentioned.
Then using the software version I gave you -
1. Run the install.exe
2. Plug your cable/interface setup into the car, ignition on.
3. Plug USB cable into PC and start the driver install when it pops like we discussed earlier.
