The Weedspeed Mark II: E46 330Xi

So after totaling our Weedspeed Compact -

    - we managed to salvage a bunch of parts that we believe survived the crash unharmed, though admittedly we cannot know for sure until this build has been completed and tested with said parts but still! Fingers crossed.

Anyway, a day or two after the salvage we were sure that a new build would start soon, and we leaned towards building a similar build but with a E46 Compact instead. However, since my brother is unpatient as hell and aching to get a car out on the road this summer we figured we'd take the easiest approach possible and got ourselves an E46 330Xi Sedan instead.

The plans for THIS season are the following
    • Same engine as in the compact, M54B30 with Precision 6766 Turbo
    • New exhaust manifold because of top-mounted turbo instead of lower-mounted
    • Shed as much weight as possible by ditching the interior etc
    • Full Cage for rigidity and safety
    • New seats - the old ones survived but are uncomfortably small
    • Stock gearbox and power distributor box, same as in the compact
    • MaxxECU
    • Some decent coilovers - not yet decided on which ones
    • Stock rear axle with the 188-housing

With this setup we are hoping to at least get some driving done this summer, get a basic feel for the car, and identify the strenghts and weaknesses of the build so that we have a reference on what to do to improve the char in any manner possible during the winter.

The plans for NEXT season are the following

    • Improve on whatever weaknesses we managed to identify
    • Glass fibre Widebody quarterpanels front+rear, rear trunk, hood and doors
    • M or CSL front, not really sure
    • Paint
    • Rear wing + front splitter
    • Whatever else we haven't thought of yet

Getting started on the Weedspeed Mark II
Step one was gutting the car from all the unnecessary weight which was quick and easy work. Unfortunately the car seems to be pretty rusty underneath, but we'll just have to warrior through the process of grinding that shit away, and then apply some decent undercarriage bodyspray. In the process of getting rid of the weight we found a single plant that had made the car it's haven.

Weedspeed true to it's name indeed, so of course we took this as a sign of blessing from the racing gods, blessed be your speed, sacred thy grip.

Step two was getting the cage fitted and then fully welded in place.

So that's we are at right now. Next step is fitting the front frame, then modifying the front beams to make place for the whole turbo setup.

As always, questions and comments are welcome and hopefully we will be able to provide a decent chunk of videos and race reports from this car since those were sorta absent from the Weedspeed Mark I.

How long was that other compact finished for? Seems like it didn't last long.

It was completed, build-wise, for about 2 weeks before the crash. Those 2 weeks consisted of getting all the adjustments sorted, we had alot of problems with that, but eventually we figured it all out. Tools that end up being faulty can really mess up your time schedule.

The car was up and running an hour or so with a completed fuel-map before the crash.

Well, yeah, but at the same time...Meh...no good in dwelling on things you can't undo, though I'll admit to being grumpy and having a hard time to find the motivation at the start of this build, but I am starting to come around now much to the delight of my brother since he no longer has to carry the burden on his shoulders alone.

Anyways, the people over at Raidopower were sympathetic to our cause and we recieved a sweet discount on new seats, belts and camberadjusters

We also put the front frame in place, and modified the supportbeams to accommodate space for a new exhaust manifold that we'll build later on.

Tomorrow we'll clean the engine, and probably mount it in place aswell so that we can eventually get started on the exhaust manifold.

We had just gotten it fuelmapped on the street on our way home from the dyno that wouldn't work, in the middle of the night basicly, and on our way to the gas station a deer jumped in front of the car and as the driver braked all 4 Wheels locked and the rear came flying putting the car sideways down a steep ditch which led to it Rolling and landing on it's roof.

Everyone involved walked away unbruised, even the damn deer!

Allright, so after modifiying the support beam and getting the front frame in place we got started on the exhaust manifold.

First we needed to figure out exactly where the turbo would be located.

Once we knew where it would be located we welded a couple of rods onto the collector, and removed the turbo.

Then we used a old M54 head that we had laying around as a jigg.

Once the front part of the exhaust manifold was welded we tested it for clearance, and made sure that we AC-pump wouldn't get in the way.

Exhaust manifold complete, we forgot to take a picture of it fully welded out in the open...

Getting started on the 3,5" downpipe, a somewhat tight fit but it'll work.

We're thinking the wastegate will be placed something like this.

That's all for now, more updates to come.

OK so I've been really lazy on the updates, but here comes a decent batch of pics for you all

We modified our the wastegate pipe, we weren't really happy with how the first one turned out.

And here's how it's placed with the modifications.

Some new piping for the intercooler, some of it new, some of it scavanged from the compact.

    Oil cooler mounted.

    Seats mounted.

Turbo placement with all the AC piping.

We put the fuel delivery system in the spare tire bowl.

Fuel lines in place undeanth aswell.

    Fuel preassure regulator in place.

Got the exhaust system wrapped with exhaust bandaging.

Got our coilovers, K-sport super racing.

    Some heat shielding.

Had to butcher the air filter a little to prevent it from fighting over space with the front lights

Got some paint in the cabin. Not the best but for now it will do just fine.

    Seats and belts in place.

Putting some interior pieces back in place.

Made a cover for the fuel delivery system, still needs to be painted/clothed and sealed with some rubber seals.

Not THAT much left till we can start this sucker up.

    That's all for now

This time if a deer tries his luck we won't brake. But yes that is actually the thing that is bugging is the most, that we never got to find out just how fast the Compact was.

So dyno has been booked, we're benching it next Monday, and the next Friday we'll be testing the car at the local track Mantorp with 5100.se

You and me both, but at least the 330 was very quick to get built which is the only way we'll be getting any sort of track time this year, considering 2 months instead of 7 compared to the Compact.
