I averaged 25.3 out of the E38 today going to West TN and back. It probably could have been a little better, but there was a wreck on the way home that had me sitting in stop and go for a long time. I love the fuel mileage with these things for a big car.
On the highway, after I changed the spark plugs I am able to get 24-26 in the M5. Before the spark plug change it was closer to 22.5, the plugs were way past due for a change.

I don't think I've explained the problem correctly.

I cant actually get a car into the shop withou blowing out the existing door and putting in a garage door.

That was a bit of a pain. Had to take the headers off.
A little more PM and replace rod bearings and it will be ready

That's a very familiar sight. I had to look at the same thing for almost 2 months before I finally got to put mine in.

I guess I better quit bitching about mine not having AC....but I am going to fix that very shortly.

Yes, I have a 98 750 rear subframe with sway mounts. I already swapped the brakes and the 750 axles fit the m5 diff flanges.

That's awesome. So will you not get a code now for using cruise control then?

I can't imagine he would since I have the 2.93 in mine and I don't get any codes for it. He'll have the correct diff, so there shouldn't be any issues.

When I got to where I could no longer physically be a mechanic any more or have the same income I used to, I got rid of my house and moved on the boat full time. It really is a great way to live, but I really miss having a shop in my back yard. On the good side, I no longer have to worry about that big payment every month.

It's an odd thing with this engine, it has been know to eat upper shells and even spin a bearing. Some go early 100k or so some go a lot higher with no problem.
Since this engine had failed guides and I have no idea of its history or oil change intervals, I figured its just a good idea.
I'm trying to get this thing a good chance at a long new life

Thats bizzare, you never really hear of BMW engines eating rod bearings. Id like to see how they look when they come out.

For some reason I wasn't expecting ITBs on the s62 even tho I know the s54 has them and the air intake should have tipped me off.

Sounds like its similar to the crank walk issue with DSMs. Most estimates put the actual effected engines around 6% of total production, but when you read about it online it sounds like they all had an issue.

If anyone asks you if you want to change out rod bearings tell them NO! It sucks
I got it done, just hope I did it right.
    IMG_0474.jpg
Only 1 looked worse than the others, the crank didn't have any marks on it and was still in spec. actually a bit tighter than the others.

What was the hard part? I'm hoping to not have to do that job for a long time, but I am curious.

Having the engine laying on its side on the floor and trying to torque the bolts to 60 degrees without messing up. Not to mention the 50 some oil pan bolts and more than a dozen o rings.

Would an engine stand help? Could it even have held the engine without the oil pan?

BMW went with quantity not quality of bell housing bolts. I'm not sure I mount it on an engine stand upright with the oil pan on. Upside down there is nothing substantial to bolt to.

I guess it might be easier to do in the car with the engine suspended from above. There must be a good way to do it, right?
