I was looking at my trim, thinking about buying this replacement rubber instead of new chrome trim, but I also noticed that there is an additional piece of rubber (or plastic?) that runs along the interior side of the chrome. Mine is cracked in several places. Is there an aftermarket source for this as well? Perhaps a BMW part number?,,

Hey Zener I plan to buy a set of these sometime soon. When I do I'll PM you. I can buy some extras and we can work out a shipping arrangement.

GMCPaul - These look great, simple elegant solution. Now if you could come up with something for that expensive headlight strip.

No fasteners I used a plastic putty knife to put it under the trim. Its a little slow but no longer then a 5 min job.

    Installed!

Finally after I got around to picking up the new clips for the drip rails, I got my new rubber seals installed along the rear that GMCPaul has sourced for the community! Everything went very smoothly just make sure you have all the new clips and grommets before pulling the rails off the car; many of mine broke upon removal. In total I think there are like 38 clips, tabs, and plastic grommets that are needed to properly reattach the drip rails so be prepared. One type of the fastener was $0.12 each and the rest were like $0.34 each or so. It was under $20 for everything with my discount at the BMW dealer so not too bad. Anyway here are a few pictures I snapped in the parking deck at school today...

I will try to snap some better pictures tomorrow in the daylight with a camera if anyone wants them.

Now that I have seen what GMCPaul provided I'm am going to show my leftover piece to the guy that does our racecar windshields and see if it is not something he could get.

It looks like to me it is some sort of generic glass moulding maybe? I think he is coming to put the front glass back in one of our cars in the next week or so and I will ask him then.

In the meantime maybe Paul could shed some light on how he sourced it. Was this something that you had made specifically or just bought a large roll in bulk of something that was basically off the shelf? Looks like some people are still in needs and I can foresee the demand in the future too as more and more people snag these cars up and need to replace the tired old looking gasket.

It would be great if we could find a steady supply for this rubber moulding.

This seal was normally only made in a foam rubber version and its was made for a industrial seagoing application but since the manufacturer can run the same equipment and die used to make the foam seal version that they can when using a EDPM rubber instead I had them make their minimum 250' run they require to do something like this. The cost ended up being $480.00 for a 250"+ roll. Which we then cut into 2'6" sections with 2 required per car.
In regard's to future purchase discussions PLEASE only use the Classified Posting Posted at the following link2112847-E38-Replacement-Rear-Door-Trim-Weather-Strip-Seal-SOLD
as discussion's of or the promoting of sales in this forum aren't allowed and the moderators have been very lenient on this post and I don't want to end up suspended.
    Thanks!!

If anyone is willing to help us from the international community that would be very generous. I know I would pay for someone's set in advance and cover the cost if they would order me a set and ship to Canada. Mine must have 30 cracks on each side

I just discovered this since it got bumped to the front page today. This is a great option and can't beat the price. One of the first projects I did on my car was to replace that chrome w/seal trim piece on both corners. I was shocked at how expensive it was. The new parts didn't last that long either and both of my corners have failed again. The other thing that happens (to me anyway) when replacing the entire chrome piece was a mismatch of the old (long) chrome trim and the new corner. The old chrome couldn't polish after years of sun damage.

I currently have removed the entire trim above all the windows and have painted it black. I have ordered all new clips and have to epoxy the clips to the corner trim again. Great find with these seals that Paul has sourced and good timing for me since I will be putting this trim piece back on this month. So I just placed my order!

For reference on this trim piece along with associated part numbers you can look at an R&R Procedure that I wrote 9 years ago that is posted on e38.org. Hope it will help for anyone that has to remove their trim to rehab broken clips before adding Paul's seal. You'll note in my procedure doc, I paid about $100 less per trim piece then what they cost today; the trim piece Chrome w/seal is about $180 now (for one).

    http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/166650

Anyway, when I install the trim and new seal, I will post pics and comment in my build thread (see my sig).

Intsall step by step with pics.

I finally did my install after having the trim sitting in my desk drawer all winter.

I used a metal pick, do yourself a favour and use something plastic, as I scratched the chrome trim despite trying to be careful.

    Some before pics:
    drivers side

    passengers side

Step 1: removal of old trim
Tools - don't use metal, if you're smart.

    using pick carefully

what stock trim looks like coming out

get a piece out and pull

I ended up getting nervous of gouging the paint after picking for about a minute

what the white clips look like, I suspected mine would be in good shape, because someone really cared for my car for its 13 years of life before I got it.

this rubber clip came out of my drivers side, didn't find one on the passenger side

my bottom white clip was intact but unsealed from the chrome trim piece so I made a quick trip to the store for some crazy glue, couple dabs did the trick.

workbench for guy with no garage, eventually I got out the heat gun and used it on the low setting to soften up the glue and pull the trim out more easily.

I used a razor on the passenger side to make an initial cut in the stock rubber trim just to make getting it out easier. After it was all out , I used isopropyl to clean out the gutters, which would make it very clean, but much harder later to plug in new trim.

first attempt at putting in the new trim,

got stuck here at mid point and called it a night. didn't want to fight with it in the dark. The butyl was coming out and getting everywhere, and my thumbs were very sore from all the pushing. I got the trim inside and cleaned up all the butyl that was going everywhere using a soft cloth and some household spray cleaner.

after thinking about how hard it was over night, I thought, gee what to use when pushing something into a tight place, how about some quick detailer, or spray wax.

After this it was easy. Also found some remnants of old trim that was stopping me last night

after trying to be careful, couple of scratches I will need to buff out later

ended up pushing new rubber trim in with the back of a plastic spoon

bottom cut on drivers side was a little short, used scissors

top cut drivers side with scissors

final step to cut bottom on passenger side

    top cut passenger side

    final bottom cut passenger side

I went back and read GMCPaul's description post and ended up notching the drivers side in the middle for one clip that was in the way, other wise fit was good, tight but consistent. My super glued bottom white clip is holding firm, feels tight.

End product is cleaner looking car and some (more) pride of ownership! I already LOVE this car, A LOT.
I read that there is another way of installing it, I suspect its with the flap complete tucked in, but all the pic links are dead so I couldn't see an example. I'm happy with what I did. Should be easy to keep it clean.
Final tip, don't use the heat gun to push in the new trim, it just gets the butyl soft and all over your hands and the chrome. Use spray wax or a quick detailer.

    Wes.
