I thought 318i coupes had a 188mm differential... I remember reading you had to get it from a ti to install into an E21 case.

If you get tired of waiting to find one at junkyard prices, I'd check with www.2002parts.com first.

    The e36 318i/is and 318ti all have 168mm diffs.

agreed. Kp, i believe your parts are from a medium case not a small case.

are you sure, the E30 318 had a small case but i thought the E36 went to a medium case.

100% sure. The guts in my e21 diff are from an e36 318is

The e36 320i also has a 168mm diff, but there probably aren't many of those in the US.

I think being Canadian is confusing the issue... there's a much wider variation in euro/canadian cars and a lot more small case diffs used. I'm 100% certain that I have READ that US coupes have a 188mm diff. Reading doesn't make it a fact though, and I've mercifully never been tasked to look at an E36 up close.

If any e36 318 has a 188mm diff, it was swapped in. They all came with 168mm diffs, regardless of USA/Canada/Euro spec.

The ti has an E30 style rear suspension (people use it for 5 lug swaps), is that also true of 318 coupes? Maybe there's more at work than just the diff size.

No, the 318i/is has the e36 style rear suspension. The diffs have two mounting points on the rear cover. They look like the 188mm e36 diffs, but smaller.

Found a pic on google images. The diff on the left is a 318i/is diff, one on the right is a 188mm.

    Joey has it correct.

In short, the 4-cylinder E36's came with 168mm diffs.
