Ahhh makes sense.
I'm actually in the middle of trying to get this done myself.
E39 M5 rotors all around(E46 m3 rears are same dimensions)
17z 6 piston cayenne front calipers with 18z pads(pad contact height is about 1mm less than the M5 pad so fits the M5 rotor like a glove) Calipers need to be converted to radial mount.
Boxster S rear calipers with Rally Road M3 brackets(E46 M3 carrier bracket is the same as the E39 M5, so confirmed bolt on)
Originally I was going to use the front boxster s calipers as well, but they look tiny up front and leave about 5mm of unused pad area on the M5 rotors.
Soon I should be done this project, also in the middle of my M5 diff swap(drive shaft adapter is being CNC'ed this coming week)

Good write up showing the difference between the both. Looks like just the caliper mounting height along with the casting being a bit larger.

Chigga, whats your opinion on the 18z in front and BoxsterS in the rear with the Rallyroad brackets? Only having to fabricate one set of backets sounds better to me.
Jack, how is the swept area on the rears?

On Rally Road's website he states the 996 caliper on the rear will not fully sweep the rotor unless you run the front 996 pads in the rear caliper, which extend further towards the hub.
Just wondering if you had found that to be the case and had a close photo showing the unswept area between the hub and pad.

Bump....
Did you get your calipers in yet? Updates/pics on the rear?

Milling down the front caliper lug mounts this week along with ordering the rear brackets.
I installed the non S boxster pads in the rear, sweeps the rotor perfectly. So that's 100%, just need to order the brackets.
I got some 18z front pads, they leave about 2-3mm of un swept area on the M5 rotor after putting them on the face of the rotor. I can live with that, I will coat the rotor to cover that.

Beautiful color both car and calipers look awesome !!
These are E39 M5 front rotors right? They look like they fit the 17z swept area perfect!
Any chance you want to inbox me the bracket dimensions?

I have Brembo (Racing Dynamics badged) 355mm BBK in front. It's fantastic, but I only have it because it came with the car. Before I drop over $1k on just front brake parts when the time comes, I will probably switch to M5 brakes all around. This thread has been inspirational. (The current rear is E34 M5 - 315/30).
And yes, the blue car looks nice!

Is there a final list of parts that can be posted if the conversion was successful for reference?
From reading the thread I see:
- Road Rally Rear E46 M3 Bracket - $195
- Rear M3 Rotors ?
- Rear M3 pads ?
- Rear Boxter s Calipers - $400
- Custom Front Bracket
- Front 17z Caliper - $500
- Front 18z pad
- E60 535i Rotors - $250
The front bracket is the only part that looks to require some professional work to complete. Probably around $1500 into this kit or so to get a pretty sweet brembo set up. Would definitely like to try this.
